Orahood - Martha Lewis

Source - Crawfordsville Journal Review - 8 Jan 1942

Martha Caroline Orahood was born March 22, 1864, about two miles east of Silverwood on the farm now occupied by Mrs. Nettie Dotson. she was the youngest daughter of Irvin and Morning Lewis. In the quiet hours of Jan 3, 1942, she gently fell asleep, age 77 years, 9 months and 12 days. Most of her life was spent in the neighborhood of her birth. Her education was limited to what the rural school of Frog Pond provided in her youth. April 27, 1882, she was united in marriage with Aaron T. Orahood, who died April 5, 1935. To this union was born one son, Seward L. who was her pride and joy until his death, Sept 13, 1936. August 30, 1937 she was united in marriage with George Orahood, who with three grandchildren, Stanley Dean Orahood, Mrs. Gene Millikan, and Mary Louise Orahood and many other relatives and a host of friends mourn her departure. In early life she confessed her Christ and became a member of the East Liberty Church, where her membership resided the rest of her life. To this affiliation she remained steadfast and faithful, always taking a prominent part in all the activities of the church. "Mat" Orahood, as she was familiarly known to her many friends, was of very cheerful disposition. She scattered sunshine all along her way and wherever she went she made friends and was gladly received. In the last few days of her illness she suffered much, but through it all she was very patient and thoughtful of those who cared for her. In summing up her cheerful, unselfish life, we believe she could say in the words of the apostle Paul; "

I have fought a good fight.

I have finished my course, I have kept the faith;

henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness,

which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day."

They are not lost who find The sunset gate, the goal Of all their faithful years:

Not lost are they, who reach The summit of their climb,

The peak above the clouds and storms;

They are not lost who find the light of sun and stars and God.
