Thomas Slattery, one of our oldest and bestknown residents, died at 8:30 o'clock Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Sullivan on West Market Street.  Mr. Slattery was born in Ireland 76 years ago and came to this country shortly after he attained his majority.  He located in Crawfordsville and was for many years a prominent man of affairs.  He was a contractor and built some of the biggest bridges in this section. About 30 years ago he built the bridge across Sugar Creek, just this side of the Covington Hill.  It was one of the first iron bridges constructed in this part of the country.  He was at one time a man of considerable means but he lost all in later years.  Mr. Slattery was an active and enthusiastic democrat and for years occupied a prominent place in the councils of the party.  He had nothing to ask from the party but worked simply because he believed in its principles and for this reason his advice was the more eagerly sought.  He was a companionable man and enjoyed the esteem and respect of all men to a marked degree.  Mr. Slattery's wife died five years ago.  He leaves five children: Mrs. Sullivan; William, Frank and Patrick Slattery of this city; and Edard Slattery of Rockford, Ill.  The funeral takesk place Tuesday morning at St. Bernard's Church -kbz
