Joseph Monroe Smith, son of Ruben and Mary Helm Smith was born near Rockville, Parke County, Indiana, September 12, 1851, died February 10, 1926 at his home at Deer's Mill at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 28 days. Mr. Smith was a member of a family of seven children, five sons and two daughters, all having preceded him in death. On October 19, 1879 he was united in marriage to Almarinda Lang, whose death occurred January 31st, just ten days before her husband's death. Seven children were born to this union, namely: Bert of Idaho; Clarence of Yountsville; Mrs. Pearl Woods of Crawfordsville; Claude of Waveland; Carl of near Byron and Mrs. Ora Myers of Parke County and Guy at home. For the past three years. Mr. Smith has been in ill health with a complication of diseases from which he passed through much suffering. Thus the last chapter of a long and useful life is closed, a life of much hard toil and endeavor. In his passing we are again reminded of the grim fact that one by one the silent reaper gathers to his fold the sons of men, but the good deeds of their lives imprinted on our memories, not only make us better citizens but more able to meet the final call which is coming to all. To mourn the death of Mr. Smith are his children, fourteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, other relatives and many friends.

So much for Family Lore -- I was told many times over that my great grandmother, Almarinda Lang Smith died just a couple of weeks after, mourning her beloved Joe.
Guess what - Allie died the 31st, ten days BEFORE.  What a hoot !!
