Squire Smith, a well known resident of this city for the last 35 years died Wednesday afternoon of diseases incident to old age. He had been ill for the last 5 days at the home of his son, RC Smith, 400 Tinsley Avenue. THe deceased was born in VA Aug 28, 1825, and was 85 years and 3 days old at the time of his death. He came to Indiana in the 30s and has since then resided at Clermont, Tipton, Indianapolis and this city. He operated a cooper shop at Clermont for many years and while thus engaged there married Miss Sarah Ann Pittman Nov 18, 1847. Three children were born to this union, two of whom survive. Mrs. Smith is living as also are RC Smith, a son and Mrs. MC Kline, a daughter. Charles L. Smith, a son died at Indianapolis at age 19, several years ago. He also has six grandchildren, Miss Mae Kline, Harry Kline, Herbert Smith, Lee Smith, Robert Smith and Miss Helen Smith. After coming to Indiana in the 30s Mr. Smith resided at Clermont until the close of the war, when he removed to Tipton and there operated a saw mill. Later he moved to Indianapolis and came from there to this city in 1874. Soon after coming here he became identified with his son RC Smith in the drug business. Under the name of RC Smith & Company they operated a drug store on South Washington Street where George W. Cook has his present stand. Later the firm changed, Mr. Smith still retaining an interest in it, being interested in the store when the firm title read Smith & Morgan and also Smith & Steele. George Steele purchased his interest and Mr. Smith then retired from the drug business. Mr. Smith joined the Christian Church when 15 years old and continued his membership throughout his life. Funeral services will be conducted Friday from the home of RC Smith at 400 Tinsley Avenue. The services will be held at 2:30 o'clock. The interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. - typed by kbz

Funeral services for Squire Smith were conducted Friday at 2:30 o'clock from the home of his son, RG Smith at 400 Tinsley Ave. The services were in charge of Rev. WH Kerr and and were largely attended. Mrs. WC Hessler sang, Some Day We'll Understand. The pall bearers were John A. Booe, EP Smith, John W. Stroh, JW Clark, Jacob Steel and AB Quick, all of whom were chuch associaties of the deceased. MD White, Warren Ashley and Isaac Davis, members of the octogenarian club of which Mr. Smith was a charter member, served as honorary pall bearers. Other members of the club were unable to attend the services. The body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. - typed by kbz
