John W. Small, for 37 years the owner and editor of the Waynetown Dispatch died Thursday morning at Culver Hospital here, following extended illness. Mr. Small’s death took place at 5:45 o’clock after he had been a patient at the hospital since January 1st.  The deceased was well known through this part of the state. He was forced to give up his newspaper activities a few years ago when his health began to fail. For the past year he had been in a serious condition.  Mr. Small began his newspaper career at Veedersburg and 37 years ago assumed the management of the Waynetown Dispatch (sic) which he had published up until the time his health failed. Mr. Small was born Oct 14, 1863 on a farm near Waynetown. He was the son of Edward and Permelia Bratton Small.  Thirty two years ago Mr. Small was married to Nancy T. Higbee and on Sept 15, 1927, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Petro.  He as a member of the Waynetown Baptist Church and for many years had been prominently identified with the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.  Mr. Small had devoted his entire life to the printing industry. Besides his widow he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Elleta Hendricks of Pekin, Illinois.  One grandson John William Hendricks also survives.   Two sisters, Mrs. J A Schoonover of Lafayette and Mrs. TM Lucas of Waynetown and one brother, Frank Small of Crawfordsville also survives.  The funeral services will be held at the home in Waynetown Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock with Rev., Cletus Brown of the Baptist Church officiating.  The Masons will conduct a service at the Waynetown cemetery. - kbz

Waynetown, Ind March 7 – Funeral services will be held at the family home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock for John W. Small for 37 years owner and editor of the Waynetown Dispatch (sic) who died Thursday in Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville after an illness of several years. The Rev. Cletus Brown of the Baptist Church will official burial in Waynetown cemetery where the Masonic Lodge will hold a service. - kbz

Crawfordsville, March 6 – John W. Small, 67 years old, died at the Culver Hospital here today after an extended illness. Small, who was born on a farm in Montgomery County, had been identified with the printing ndustry of western Indiana since his youth. For 36 years he had been publisher and editor of the Waynetown Dispatch. Small was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow Lodges. - kbz

Gas City, Ind Oct 7 – the State convention of Indiana Associated Weeklies will be held in Gas City Oct 26 and 27.  CW VanValer publisher of a local paper will give an address at the library hall on the afternoon of the 26th on the subject, “Developing a Country Newspaper.” A banquet will be held that evening. The regular business will be transacted Saturday morning Oct 27.  John W. Small of the Waynetown Dispatch is president of the Indiana Associated Weeklies; Walter Leach editor of the Gas City Journal is VP and Ora McDaniel of the Advance Hustler is sec-treas.

The Waynetown Hornet has been sold to Robert Osborn and JOHN SMALL, who will publish it in future.  John Brant who has been in control for some time past will go to Veedersburg to assist CM Berry on the News. The new management of the Hornet will no doubt greatly improve the paper.

John Small, of the Waynetown Despatch was among our numerous callers Wednesday. Mr. Small is editor of one of the best country papers in Indiana.

Indianapolis June 2 – The Indiana Associated Weeklies, an organization of newspaper publishers outside of county seat towns will meet Friday and Saturday of this week for their semi-annual convention. Officers will be elected at the first session Friday morning. Following the election of officers, TE Huston, publisher of the Independent at Waveland will discuss “The Bulletin and Its Future.”  A Country Publishers’s Cost System will be the subject of a paper by Edgar M. Baldwin of the Fairmount News. The IAW and How to make it what It should be will be discussed by LW Ragon of the Lowell Tribune. At the close of the morning session delegates will be appointed to the national convention at Chicago.  Friday afternoon Gregory Walden of the Pittsboro Sun will lead a discussion of Chapter 66 Acts of 1913. “The Future of the Country Weekly,” by JF Warfel of the Ladoga lEader and “The Country Weekly and the Parcel Post,” by John W. Small of the Waynetown Dispatch will be other features of the session.
