Mrs. Ellen Smith was born in Bardstown, Ky., June 20, 1834. Until she removed to Crawfordsville, after the war, she was in the household of the Speed family, a prominent Kentucky name, and in some of its branches well known here. A widow for nineteen years, she had a hard struggle, but such was her persistence that, in spite of sickness and a large family, she finally succeeded in buying for herself a small property west of the college grounds. During the last few years of her life, she followed the profession of a trained nurse, and endeared herself to many families by her skill and faithfulness. It was in this intimate relation with various families that she made many warm and lasting friendships. She was the mother of thirteen children, five of whom are living. Charles and Joseph are in Butte City, Montana, and it was there that their mother died; James and Wyckliffe are citizens of Crawfordsville and Emma is in Illinois. The remains will be brought to Crawfordsville. The funeral services have been appointed for 3 o’clock Monday afternoon at the A. M. E. Church with the interment being at Oak Hill.
The best monument that her children can raise to her memory is to follow her example of faithfulness and uprightness.
