Relatives here have recieved word of the death of Samuel M. Vancleave, formerly of this city which occurred at Santa Monica, California on June 24. Mr. Vancleave who was 72 was raised in this community and has many friends among the older people here. He left here about 12 years ago going to Kansas City Mo. A few years ago he gave up business there and went to Calif for his health. Mr. Vancleave will be remembered here thru an accident that occurred here in May 1903 in which Mrs. Vancleave was killed. Mr. and Mrs. VanCleave, Mrs. Samuel Johnson; Harold Vancleave and Miss Edith Johnson were in a cab on Whitlock Ave. The cab wheels ran into the deep rut in the road, washed out by rain and caused the horses to run away. Mrs. Vancleave became frightened and jumped from the cab, breaking her neck when she alighted. The horses continued to run until Mr. Vancleave climbed from the cab interior to the seat, grasped the reins and stopped the team. The cab driver, Fred Mills had been thrown from the seat when the cab hit the rut. Later Mr. Vancleave sued the city and recovered damages as a result of the death of his wife. Mr. VanCleave was later married a second time. He is survived by his widow; one son, William of Des Moines, Iowa. two grandchildren, one brother, William of Arkansas and two sisters, Mrs. John Hunt of this city and Mrs. R.N. McCoy of Indianapolis. Two children born to Mr. Vancleave and his first wife preceded him in death, Mrs. Minnie Pahlman and Charles Vancleave. The latter was killed in a rr wreck a few years ago. The surviving son was born to Mr. Vancleave's first wife. - kbz
