HARRELL FAMILY REUNIONS

Source: Crawfordsville Indiana Daily News Review July 19, 1900

The first family reunion of the Harrell family was held at the residence of JT Harrell 10 miles south of Crawfordsville July 18, 1900. There are 113 of this family relation living and it was our only regret that they could not have been with us, and enjoyed the day. JT Harrell’s residence had been selected as a place to hold this first family reunion, first because he is the oldest one living of the family, second because of his untiring efforts to make a success out of anything he undertakes, third because his residence is nearly at the center of the Harrell district and for many minor reasons. His residence was beautifully decorated with the flags of our country. The shade of that fine cheery tree which stands in his yard furnished shade for all. The relatives and friends began to gather very early in the morning and continued to come until about 65 or 70 were present, 45 of this number being members of the Harrell family. Friendly greetings was the order of the forenoon. At 12 o’clock an excellent dinner was spread which had been prepared and brought by relatives and friends. This good dinner was put on a table about 50’ in length placed under the shade of the beautiful cherry tree and it was very heavily loaded with the good things to eat of the country. At about 1:30 prayer was offered by GT Stamp, and following quite a number of interesting talks, among them JF Farrell; AP Harrell; H Harrell; Richard Rusk; Mrs. Rev Ella Harrel; Mrs. Elvita Stump and the writer. At the close of these good talks it was decided to make this family reunion an annual affair and to do this it was necessary to elect a president and secretary. This was quickly done, JF Harrell president and Richard Rusk, secretary. It was decided to hold the next reunion at the residence of Samuel Stump the last Wednesday in July 1901. -- transcribed by kbz
