Morgan County began its official existence February 15, 1822. Martinsville is the County Seat. First settled in 1822 by Joshua Taylor, Judge Gray, Jacob Cutler, G. W. Preston, Dr. Sims, and other, by 1849 it contained a population of about 600. Morgan County is divided into 14 Townships as follows: Adams, Ashland, Baker, Brown, Clay, Green, Gregg, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Ray and Washington.

According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830.

Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Morgan County start with the prefix 55 because it is the fifty-fifth county in alphabetical listing.
