Evelyn (Yancheff) Toscos

Evelyn Toscos (born as Gitsa Yancheff), Passed Away Wednesday November 22, 2017 at Chapman Place, Ft Wayne. Born Gitsa Yancheff (maiden name) on January 22, 1931 in the small village of Vissinia, near the town of Kastoria, in northern Greece. She was the only child of Boris Yancheff and Slavka (maiden name Kotchoff). In 1947, after WWII, Evelyn and her mother took an ocean voyage across the Atlantic where she met her father for the first time on Ellis Island at the tender age of sixteen. After graduating from Central High School of Fort Wayne at the age of 20, Evelyn went on to work at Rea Magnet Wire. At age 23 she married her best friend's brother, Thomas Toscos. The couple became members of St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, and later Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Soon thereafter, Evelyn became a stay-at-home mother and one of the best cooks in the family. She was known for her homemade bread and spontaneous cooking - in particular making fruit pies for her children and grandchildren. Crocheting, gardening, as well as jigsaw and crossword puzzles were hobbies she enjoyed in addition to cooking. However, spending time with her grandchildren was her ultimate joy. Her love was so strong that soon after Evelyn was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she summoned the strength to walk a 5K race to support her oldest granddaughter's cause to cure Type 1 Diabetes. In addition to her deep love of her children and grandchildren, Evelyn was revered for her acts of kindness, strength, determination, and resilience. At 52 years of age she decided to conquer her fear of the water by taking swimming lessons. Determined to conquer her fear of flying, Evelyn challenged herself with a 12 hour plane ride on her first trip back to Greece in her mid-50s. In her mid-60's, Evelyn decided to return to work and found a job at Blackhawk Middle School in the kitchen, cleaning cookware. No pan could have been cleaner then after she was done washing it! After moving to a senior living center in her 80's, Evelyn finished the Fort for Fitness 26.2 mile Seniors Marathon by walking one mile each week during the summer with the assistance of a walker. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, and husband Thomas. Surviving are her children Karen, Theodore (Tammy) and George Toscos and five grandchildren Zoe, Eva, Mia, Madeline, and Nicholas. Dan D. Alford

Collision Near City Limits Last Evening
A four-year-old Delaware county boy became Adams county's second traffic fatality of 1963, when he was killed in a car-truck accident near the entrance to Stratton Place on U.S. 224 Monday evening. Dead on arrival at the Parkview hospital in Fort Wayne was Dan D. Alfred, 4, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Reginald Alfred of Selma, near Muncie, in Delaware county. Listed in critical condition at the Parkview hospital at 10 o'clock this morning was Kent D. Steiner, 7, of Upland, who was riding in the same auto as the accident victim. The mishap occurred at 7 o'clock Monday evening on 224, just west of the entrance to Stratton Place, when the trailer of a truck veered into the opposite lane of traffic and sideswiped a car driven by Rev. Alfred. Five other passengers in the car, including four youngsters, were less seriously injured. Others Injured Billy Alfred, 11, suffered lacerations about the face and left arm, and was held at the local hospital. Kim Steiner, 3, suffered facial cuts; Greg Steiner, 5, received a cut to the inside of the lower lip; and Beth Steiner, one-year-old, suffered a facial laceration. The mother of the Steiner children, Mrs. Richard Steiner, escaped injury. The truck was driven by Bradford Laird Rogers, 23, a resident of Kirklin, near Frankfort. Rogers was traveling toward Decatur while the 1961 station wagon driven by Rev. Alfred was traveling away from the city. Rain had begun and the highway was becoming slick at the time of the crash. As Rogers entered the curve, the trailer of the unloaded flat-bed truck slid into the opposite lane, striking the station wagon on the left front fender and tearing open the left side of the vehicle. Riding in Rear The youth who was killed, the boy listed as critical and Billy Alfred were all riding in the rear deck of the wagon. The violent impact tossed all three about the rear of the station wagon, causing the fatal and serious injuries. The Alfred boy died of a skull fracture, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wayne hospital. The Steiner boy also suffered a fracture skull. The young victim's body was returned to the Zwick funeral home here and was to be removed to the Parsons funeral home in Muncie sometime today, where funeral arrangements will be made. Rev. Alfred, Mr. Steiner and the children were traveling to Lake Placid, N.Y., where they were planning missionary work. Mr. Steiner is an instructor at Taylor University at Upland, and is the son of Rev. E.G. Steiner, former pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite church in Berne, now residing in Fort Wayne. Rev. Alfred is the pastor of the Methodist church in Selma. His wife was not making the trip. Trucker Arrested Rogers, the driver of the truck, was arrested for driving left of center, and was cited to appear in city court next Monday. Due to the slick condition of the highway a more serious charge was not brought against him. The 1961 station wagon was estimated at a total loss, while the truck suffered an estimated $150 damage. Sheriff Roger Singleton, deputy Warren Kneuss, state policeman Gene Rash and city policeman Victor Strickler were all at the scene of the accident. The impact turned the truck around in the highway and traffic in the area was tied up for a lengthy period during a heavy downpour. The position of the truck on the highway allowed only one lane of traffic through 224. The death of the young boy was the second in Adams county this year from a traffic accident. Waldo Snyder of this city was the first fatality of the year when he was killed in a one-car accident on May. 19.
