Gary D. Beachy

Gary D. Beachy of Middlebury peacefully passed away in the early evening hours of Saturday, June 1, 2019, while surrounded by family. He was 68. Born in Bemidji, Minnesota, to Joni and S. Alberta (Schrock) Beachy, Gary developed a love for the great outdoors as a child. At the age of 6, his family moved to the Goshen area, where he continued to forge his own path and develop a determination to do things his own way. He grew up surrounded by a large group of loving family and friends while he maintained a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around him. After a brief stint living in Denver, Gary made his way back to Middlebury to focus on working hard, raising his family and making a home he could be proud of. Gary's determined and deliberate nature meant that he excelled at cultivating a backyard brimming with flowers and greenery, creating perfectly crisp paint lines, finding the hidden fishing spots, tackling every type of home remodeling project, appreciating a good afternoon nap and taking the long way to enjoy the scenery. He took extreme pride in everything he did and was constantly finding things to add to his to-do list, but Gary's early mornings were often reserved for appreciating the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee in hand and good music playing. Likewise, Sunday afternoons were reserved for phone calls with his beloved kids Chad, Heather and Rachel, during which he doled out his own special blend of encouragement, advice and admiration. On the days that Gary's longtime companion Lu could convince him to ignore his carefully planned schedule, they could be found enjoying breakfast and strolling through antique shops before putting the top down on his convertible and cruising to Lake Michigan. With every task he set out to accomplish, whether big or small, Gary never stopped pushing himself to learn, grow and leave things better than he found them. Gary is survived by his children, Chad Beachy of Budapest, Hungary, Heather (Brian) Morse of Riverton, N.J., and Rachel Neely of Canton, Conn.; his grandsons Henry, Owen and Fletcher; his longtime companion and partner in life Lu Nissley of Middlebury; his sisters Emma (Wayne) Beachy and Anita (Todd) Neuschwander, both of Goshen, and Marilee (Donald) Gingerich of Clarksville, Mich.; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Joni, and mother, Alberta. Gary left instructions for his family to hold a Celebration of Life in his honor, which will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main Street, Middlebury, IN 46540. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 pm, with a memorial service from 4 to 5 pm. In keeping with his wishes, family, friends and others whose lives Gary touched are invited to join in honoring and celebrating his life and spirit. Online condolences may be left at MillerStewartFuneralHome.com, and memorial donations may be made in his name to the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation or the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Hazel E. (Noll) Degitz

Hazel E. Noll Degitz, 97, of Fort Wayne, passed away, Tuesday, October 18, 2016. She was born on September 20, 1919 in Fort Wayne to Johanna Adler Noll and Ralph Noll. She was a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne attending, Irwin Elementary, Smart School, and graduating from South Side High School in 1937. In June of 1942, under the pretense of seeing "the love of her life" before he was shipped out to Hawaii, mom traveled by train to Louisiana where he was stationed. During that weekend, on June 1, Hazel and Marvin got married without telling anyone at home. Mom returned to Fort Wayne and continued working at Fisher Brothers Paper Company until dad was discharged from the Army. Raising her family was her next endeavor, deciding to return to the workforce after her youngest child was in school fulltime. She retired from Fort Wayne Community Schools after 15 years of service as secretary at Riverside Elementary. Mom's greatest legacy was her love of serving Christ, first at Immanuel Baptist Church and later at Blackhawk Ministries and her love and dedication to her family. Christ was first, husband and family second, and herself last. If we ever needed help with anything she would put aside whatever she was doing and help us. She was a wonderful example for us. Left behind to cherish her memory are daughters, Kathy (Jim) McDowell, Diane (Mike) Carpenter, Marilyn (Dave) Knuth, son-in-law, Jack Van Til, beloved grands, Kristi (Mike) Miller, Kim (Jack) Schmidt, Michelle (Russ) Gilmore, Holly (Matt) Mitchell, Russ (Amber) Van Til, Katelyn (Dan) Ferrier and Kelsey Knuth. An avid and accomplished equestrienne, Shelly began showing American Saddlebred horses at age six. She excelled in the fields of dressage and hunter/jumper competitions, often riding horses she raised and trained herself. Shelly's fearlessness developed into a love of aviation when she received her pilot's license at age 16. She eventually flew corporate jets, and formed her own successful airplane brokerage firm - Machone International. Shelly served on several charitable boards, and dedicated her boundless energy to such good causes as the Allen County ASPCA and the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shelly married Jeff Hile in June of 2015. He survives, along with stepsons Dietrich and Nicholas Hile. Shelly will be remembered with love by sisters Vickey Smith (Douglas), Regina Sjoberg (Peter), and Bronte Guastafeste (Joseph). Her loving legacy includes nieces Kirsten Fischer and Morgan Goldsmith, and nephews Benjamin and Zachary Learman and their families. Shelly loved and was loved by a wealth of friends, including Monika Huey, Melanie Hull, Cindy Leeper, Melissa Madox, Annie Madsen, Barbara Meadows, Ann Zachary Miller, and Stacey Till. Shelly loved all creatures great and small. God always seemed to know when there was a vacancy at her house and, sure enough, there would be a new four-footed member of her family. Rather than flowers, and to honor her loving soul, her family asks for contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Allen County ASPCA. Private services will be held at a later date.

Martha (Berghoff) Ryan

Martha Berghoff Ryan, 78, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family. Marty was born in Fort Wayne on November 7, 1938. Marty was the daughter of the late Norbert G. and Betty Noll Berghoff. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in South Bend, IN and attended Barat College in Lake Forest, IL. Marty had an unwavering faith in God and devout love for her family and friends. She created a beautiful home that was often the place where all were welcome for joyful gatherings. Marty was a steadfast partner to her husband of 55+ years, Rich Ryan. Sharing the role of Grandparent to 17 grandchildren was one of her greatest joys. When not in the bleachers watching grandkids play or perform, she was often on the links with Rich. She even managed to card her 2nd hole-in-one at the age of 75 to nearly rival her husband's hole-in-one record. Marty was a compassionate leader and community volunteer. A lifetime member of the Junior League, she volunteered countless hours at the Bargain Box, knitted blankets for the Women's Care Centers and The Christ Child Society and teaching children with hearing difficulties. Marty believed strongly in the power of education and created a scholarship fund to help make college more affordable for students and their families. Marty gracefully managed the last difficult phase of her life with courage, humor and grace. She will be missed and remembered daily. Her beautiful legacy will be a reminder to be loving, generous of spirit and to treat others with compassion and respect. Marty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survived by her husband Rich of 55 plus years, five daughters, one son, and seventeen grandchildren: Marilyn (Mike), Ally and Austin Stonebraker/Stanford; Kathleen (Bob), Lauren, Mitchell and Grant Purlee; Patty (Jim), Dylan, Mackenzie, Brett and Jack Taylor; Laura Ann Ryan; Colleen (Tim), Sarah, Erin and Luke Carstens; John (Carol) Megan, Patrick, Emily, Logan and Corey Ryan. Esther (Roberts) Sichanis

Esther Sichanis, 77, went home to meet her Savior on May 4th, 2017. Born in New Haven, Indiana, on January 14, 1940, her full maiden name was Miriam Esther Roberts, and she was the devoted daughter of Herman and Cebe Roberts. The only girl of 3 older brothers, Gene, Edwin and Paul, Esther is the last of her siblings to pass away. She had such grace and class. To know her was to love her. She adored her mother, who was as gentle, sweet and innocent as Esther was. A perfectionist from a tender age, Esther would keep the Robert's home spotless while her mother went to work. Both ladies were wonderful homemakers who loved to laugh and were amazingly similar in spirit, faith and love. After 27 years apart, that precious mother-daughter bond is restored in the presence of God today. Her family moved to Fort Wayne around 1950, where Esther attended Franklin Grade School and later graduated from North Side High School. She held several jobs, starting at Central Soya, then a beauty supply firm, and then as a secretary at Anthony Wayne Bank. Later in life, she volunteered at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, worked part time at Cassandra's Shoes, then a ladies' fashion boutique, and frequently at the family business, Craft Laboratories. In 1959, she went on a blind date with George Sichanis, son of Greek immigrants, who was and still is tall, dark, handsome and nearly a decade older than she. Perfectly quaffed and super snappy dressers, the two of them made a gorgeous couple. He loved her sweet, tender nature and she loved his drive and ambition. Together they were the perfect balance. Their love story stood the test of time and in recent years, became a heart-melting example of the most expressively loving, affectionate couple people had ever seen. They were married by a greek priest in 1960 at Trinity Episcopal Church, honoring George's Greek Orthodox heritage. Esther was protestant, but they united in faith and became active, long term members of Cedar Creek Church of Christ in Leo, where she was the church pianist for many years. A very talented musician, she played beautifully by ear and sang worship. Among her many favorite things were her grandkids, fashion, music, art, decorating, her Schnauzer 'Fritz', laughing, cuddling with George, painting, bowling, golfing, theater, concerts, dining out, shopping, boating, 'snowbirding' in Naples Florida, visiting Disney World countless times, traveling the world, and hosting friends and family. Esther's biggest pride and joy were her two daughters, Jodie and Stacy, whose every need was attended in loving detail. She dressed them up like little dolls and even pressed their baby clothes. Their biggest and most supportive fan, she lovingly cheered them on as they forged through adolescence, teen hood, and adult life. The values she instilled in them provided a sturdy foundation upon which they have built their lives. She provided many wonderful opportunities to cultivate their talents and interests, but the greatest gift she passed on to her daughters was her faith in Jesus Christ. The Sichanis family is very blessed, and she was the anchor from whom those blessings arose. She always prayed for her family, for her daughter's future spouses and their children. We are so thankful for Esther, who is a rare and remarkable example of what a Godly wife, mother, friend, sister and daughter looks like. She is survived by her incredibly devoted, adoring husband of 57 years, George, and her daughter, Jodie (Scott) Harrup, and grandchildren, Lindsay, Connor and Austin; as well as her youngest daughter, Stacy (Bill) Munsie, and grandchildren, Braden and Jessica. Service is 11 am, Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 110 E. Wallen Road with calling one hour prior, Fr. Andrew Walsh officiating. Calling at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, Friday, May 12, 2017, from 2 pm to 5 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm with a Trisagion Service at 8 pm. Dean Dwight Wengert

Dean Dwight Wengert, 83, of Fort Wayne, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, in the promise of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Born September 2, 1933, in State Center, Iowa, Dean was the son of Roland Wengert and Lillian Bernard. He was the youngest of four sons, and grew up on a farm that included Belgian draft horses, Guernsey cows, Poland China hogs, chickens, and field crops. These were formative years for Dean, and he forever regarded himself as an Iowa farm boy. But being last on the farm led to Dean being the first to college. At Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, he trained as a teacher for Lutheran schools. He played football on the college team, something that farm work stood in the way of during high school. It was during his college years that he met his future wife, Ruth Hachmeister, with whom he would spend over 60 years of married life. After teaching jobs in Missouri, Minnesota, and central Indiana, Dean was called to (Suburban) Bethlehem Lutheran School, west of Fort Wayne, Indiana. As teacher and principal, Dean molded minds and manners for 35 years, obtaining his MS in education from the University of Saint Francis along the way. It was time, not for retirement but for new challenges. He secured surplus food for the young Community Harvest Food Bank as Director of Donor Relations, then worked in several departments of Sears, both in Fort Wayne. An active member of Saint Michael Lutheran Church, Dean was a thoughtful contributor at Bible study. At home, his yard and garden were not chores but an opportunity to tend God's creation. And when it came to small engine repair, Dean had a knack for finding the faulty part or starting the uncooperative engine. Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 2016, and by his parents and brothers. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Echelbarger (Randall) of Greentown, Kimberly Stickell (Lawrence) of Roanoke, and Kevin (Bridget) of Kendallville. He is also survived by grandchildren Lesley Echelbarger, Ann-Elise Winkler (Jacob), Caroline, Madeleine, Hilary, and Sophie Stickell, Nicole Schmidt, and Mason Wengert; three great grandchildren, Tyce, Elleri, and Nori. He is predeceased by great grandson Silas Winkler. Funeral services will be Monday, March 20, 2017, at 12 p.m. at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2131 Getz Road, Fort Wayne, with Rev. Reed Lessing officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Gardens in Fort Wayne.
