(c) 2001 Barb Wise (wisebarb@home.com) EXHIBIT "I" DEPOSITION TAKEN BEFORE A FIELD EXAMINER OF THE VETERANS AMDINISTRATION DATE: 17 MARCH 1954 DEPOSED BY: A. W. HENDRICKS PERSON DEPOSED: GEORGE W. NEWKIRK George W. Newkirk: I am white, male, married, age 53, reside as R. R. 1, Paoli, Ind., occupation, farmer. I am not related to Woodrow HOLLEN or James DAVIS, nor do I have any interest in this case. Q: How long have you know Mr. DAVIS? A: I knew him when he was living with his first wife. Q: How long did you know Mrs. HOLLEN? A: I only knew her when I saw her. Q: Do you recall when DAVIS married her? A: Yes. Q: Where did they live, with relation to your house? A: About 1/2 mile west. Q: Did DAVIS support her children immediately after marrying her? A: Yes. Q: Where was Woodrow? A: He was living at home with the rest of the family. Q: How much of the time was Woodrow home after he got to working for other farmers? A: When he was younger, he was at home all the time, but as he got older, he would be gone more. He worked for his uncle Sam HOLLAND, Jim STEWART, and others. He must not have stayed very much on their places as I saw him frequently, usually on weekends as he passed here. Q: Might not he have been working elsewhere and staying there and coming home on weekends? A: That's right. But that was after he was grown. When he was younger he was there all the time, as I said. Q: How did DAVIS treat Woodrow? Was there any friction between them? A: He treated him like he was his own son. None of the children had anything against him. They seemed to think a lot of him. Q: Can you give me the approximate dates all these things happened? A: No, I couldn't. I would say they moved in this vicinity close to 25 years ago, but I don't remember any dates. Q: Did the children mind their stepfather including Woodrow? A: Yes, and they never returned a word. He was a very gentle fellow and their mother probably ruled the roost. Q: Did DAVIS squander any money or neglect his family in any way? A: He had no money to squander. He did not neglect them. He was a poor man, and the times were hard, but he did the best he could with what he had. Lots of fellows would have "thrown the sponge" and would not have stuck it out. Once he helped butcher all day and he bought a half a hog and I saw him carry it over a mile on his back to his home and family. He didn't have a car or horse and he had to carry things that way if he was going to get them home. That has been almost 25 years ago. Q: Was he a person of good moral character? A: I would say so, I knew his father and brothers and they were all nice people. His father was Justice of the Peace in this township once. Q: I have no further questions. Do you have anything to add? A: No. I have given a statement before in this case. I am a WW I vet. My C No. is 112312. I certify that I have read the foregoing and my statements are true, to the best of my knowledge and belief. /signature of George W.
