Enlisted on 6 October 1917 at Paoli, Indiana. Trained at Camp Taylor, Kentucky and Camp Sevier, South Carolina. Assigned to Company D 335th Infantry. Transferred to Company M 335th Infantry and to Company K 119th infantry 30th Infantry Division. Overseas 12 May 1918 to 2 April 1919. was in the following battles. Ypres, Bellicourt, St. Souplet. Discharged on 21 April 1919. Received the Distinguished Cross Service Medal when his squad was held up by sniper fire. Later he braved heavy shell fire to aid the wounded and assisted them back to the lines. General order # 81 from the War Department.
