Enlisted on 6 July 1942 at Louisville, Kentucky. Assigned to the 15th Fighter Group 47th Fighter Squadron at Wheeler Field, Territory of Hawaii. Moved to South Field on Iwo Jima in 1944 7th Air Force. Operating P-51D's escorting B-29's to Japan. For this duty the squadron earned the Distinguished Unit Citation.
