Buried: Bethel Cemetery, 1 mile north of Orangeville, Indiana.
Inscription on stone reads "James Shields, who fought for Liberty in 1776 and died, upwards of 70 years of age".

Service: Received land for service of 3 years as a soldier in the Virginia Line.

Proof: Old Kentucky entries and deeds by Jillson, warrant no 1240
