Nuss (who had long been like a sister to her) and explained in detail the plans she wished carried out in the funeral.  She wanted to live, particularly for her family - they needed her so - but expressed continually her readiness to die, if it be the Lord's Will.  Her last audible words were: 'Dear Precious Lord.'  Jeannie was rather a self-conscious woman, not showy in her life, but quick in sympathy, loyal and earnest, full of live for the beautiful, beautiful herself, she loved the best, in material and spiritual things.  Only a girl, in years, but who shall estimate or measure the scope of her life in influence upon the stricken home from which she has flown like the eagle, mounting higher and higher until, all at once we realized she is not with us, she has gone to be with God.  To realize the fullness of his promises, leaving behind her the wonderful legacies of wifehood and motherhood, beautifully lived - her own life made beautiful by suffering, until the perfume therefrom pervades the atmosphere wherein her life was lived, and she has but gone on, out of sight, for a time, as if into another room, with Him face to face." Pat said, 'a little oil, please.'  Charlie suggested a little tonic which Pat accepted, but when he went to settle and found that the tonic was 10 cents extra he raised a howl and swore he'd been buncoed.  Then with tears in his eyes, he declared he was a poor man with barely enough to get home on.  Thinking he might be a pauper, Charlie let him off.  He is reported to be worth $200,000, and probably is, for he certainly has never squandered his money.  He left for home feeling that French Lick was a skin game from first to last."  He appeared in the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1900 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Charley (21) living with his mother.  His occupation was barber.  He appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Charles (31), Emma (24), Chester (3) and Clarence (1).  His occupation was barber shop proprietor, the same as his brother Perry.  Did they work together?  He appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Charles (40), Emma (33), Chester (13), Clarence (11) and Edyth (5).   His occupation was barber at Hotel.  He appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Charles (49), Emma (44) and Edith (16) at 210 Maple Street in French Lick.  His occupation was grocery merchant.  He appeared in the census in 1940 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Charles (60) and Emma (54) living on Maple Street.  His occupation was grocery store manager.  His highest level of education was 8th grade, hers was the same.  He died on August 22, 1957 at the age of 78 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He was buried at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

95.  Chester Gwynn Lane2–3,7,9,17,20–24 was born on November 2, 1906 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States (book H-6, page 38).

He was a gambling club owner and motel proprietor.  He and his brother Clarence owned two gambling establishments, the Club Chateau in West Baden and the Green Acres Club in French Lick (their uncle, Perry C. Lane operated the Indiana Club, directly across from the Chateau Club).  Both of them worked for a brief time at casinos in Lake Tahoe, NV and Las Vegas, NV.  Casinos, Copperheads, Pioneers and Politicians reported "The Club Chateau, adjacent to the Indiana Club, provided casino operations, eventually became a Baptist parsonage and is at this writing a private residence."  It went on to say, "The 1950's club closings were dramatic incidents in the history of the valley.  On June 12, 1950, matters came to a head when Lieutenant Albert R. Stiles of the Indiana State Police at Jasper ... confiscated roulette, dice, and poker equipment at the Gorge and at the Club Chateau ... The Gorge and Club Chateau were again raided the week preceding the Kentucky Derby held the first Saturday in May 1951.  Law enforcement officers besieged the Club Chateau on Thursday evening, May 3, arresting three operators ... twelve visitors were also arrested."  The Green Acres Club was only open for a short while.  Bowing to pressure from the authorities, Chester converted the building into a motel around 1954.  The original building burned to the ground in 1959 during a flood, and Chester and Ermel built a new motel on the same site.  Ermel Lane retired and sold the motel in 1975, but the new owners kept the name Lane's Motel.  In November 1994, a fire once again burned the motel to the ground, and a new motel was built on the same site.  As of 2012, the owners continue to use the name Lane's Motel.

He appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He graduated in 1925 at French Lick High School in Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Chester (23), Ermel (23) and James (1).  They were renting a house at 217 Walnut Street in French Lick.  His occupation was clerk at the Indiana Club.  He appeared in the census in 1940 in Prospect, Orange, Indiana, United States. It lists Chester (33), Ermel (33), Jimmie (10), Robert (8) and Harry (2).  His occupation was clerk in a private business.

He always loved to read, and he was proud to have held card number 01 at the French Lick Library (now the Melton Public Library).  His favorite genre of literature was the historical novel, but he also enjoyed mysteries such as "Sherlock Holmes" and "the Saint".  Susie Owen, the director of the library, wrote the following note to Chester Robert Lane in December 2014: "Chester Lane did, in fact, receive the first library card. The FL/WB museum flyer asked, "Who held the first library card", so people would visit the library exhibit that was up during October and November.  The library has an attractive plaque in our permanent display case stating that Mr. Lane was the first to receive a library card.  So, the question "Who held the first library card?" was rhetorical.  We also had a series of facts about Chester Lane in the museum display.  Jeff [Lane] worked with me on this.  We also have a receipt from Chas. E. Lane Groceries, Meats and Vegetables from September 9, 1929 (A mop was 25 cents).  The first library was in a room in a house on Maple Street and was opened in 1897.  Also, library books were housed in Chas. Lane's store for a time, across the street from the post office.  Your family lore is correct and the history may be richer than you knew."

He died on June 24, 1963 at the age of 56 at Orange County Hospital in Paoli, Orange, Indiana, United States. James Lane related that Chester had colon cancer about 1959.  He had had some rectal bleeding for some time before the cancer was discovered.  His doctor at Washington, IN, thought it was hemorrhoids.  He finally had a colonoscopy, which revealed the cancer.  After treatment, which improved his life somewhat, the cancer reappeared in his bones, and perhaps in his lungs.  Chester's last trip to the Orange County Hospital began with James and Ermel helping him into the back seat of the car to take him to the hospital.  However, they only made it as far as the Gulf filling station in West Baden when Chester said that he didn't think he could make it.  They called an ambulance to pick him up.  Chester's bones were so weakened by his cancer that his collar bone broke in the process of getting him into the car.  He died in the hospital about two weeks later.  The hospital put a cot in his room, and Ermel stayed with him all the time.  His death certificate reported the following: cause of death was pneumonia and colon cancer, residence was French Lick, Indiana, occupation was motel operator, marital status was married. Chester was buried on June 26, 1963 at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States. He was buried on son Bob's birthday.

96.  Clarence Philip Shively "Bud" Lane2,7,9,16–17 was born on January 22, 1909 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States (book H-12, page 4).

He was a gambling club owner.  He and his brother Chester owned two gambling establishments, the Club Chateau in West Baden and the Green Acres Club in French Lick (their uncle, Perry C. Lane operated the Indiana Club, directly across from the Chateau Club).  Both of them worked for a brief time at casinos in Lake Tahoe, NV and Las Vegas, NV.

He appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Clarence (22) and Grace (22).  His occupation was clerk at the Indiana Club.  He appeared in the census in 1940 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Clarence (30), Grace (30), Patricia (8) and Barbara (4).  His occupation was night club operator.  His highest level of education was 12th grade, Grace's was the same.

He died on February 23, 1953 at the age of 44 in Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada, United States.  The Springs Valley Herald (February 26, 1953) reported "Clarence (Bud) Lane, 44, died in Las Vegas, Nevada, Monday morning about 4 o'clock. Bud had worked Sunday night until 3 A.M. and on returning home entered the bathroom to prepare for bed and collapsed from a heart attack.  He had complained during the day Sunday that he was not feeling up to par, but did not think it serious.  His son and daughter, Buddy Joe and Ann were living with him in the same motor court as were his brother Chester and wife.  Lane was a student of the French Lick High School from 1923 to 1927, a former partner with this brother Chester in the Club Chateau, West Baden and the Green Acres Club in French Lick.  The body is being returned here today (Thursday) and will arrive at five o'clock by train and will be taken to Ritter and Son Funeral Parlors.  Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday.  Funeral arrangements are not definite as we go to press but it is thought that the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at Ritters.  He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Patty Stevenson, Ann Lane, one son, Buddy Joe, and one grandson, Bruce Stevenson.  His father Charles Lane and a sister, Mrs. Herbert Bledsoe of French Lick, and a brother Chester of West Baden and Las Vegas."  The Springs Valley Herald also reported "Clarence Philip Lane, second son of Charles and Emma Connell Lane, was born in French Lick on January 22, 1909.  He suddenly passed from this world on February 23, 1953 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 44 years and 1 month.  Bud grew up in the home of his parents and attended French Lick High School.  Most of his life was spent in French Lick.  At an early age he was united in marriage to Grace Springer.  Into their home was born three children, Patricia, now Mrs. Gene Stevenson of Paoli, Ann and Buddy Joe at home.  Bud's cheerfulness, friendliness and his pleasing personality brought him many friends.  The gift of making friends is one of God's best gifts.  To make friends one must forget oneself.  It means finding that which is noble and loving in another and appreciating it.  His generosity is best known to the many who received help when it was needed.  One of the most essential qualities of real character is the willingness to accept responsibility and Bud accepted his responsibilities without a murmur or complaint.  He was baptized into membership in the First Christian Church on March 30, 1921 by Rev. N. L. Collins.  His gifts to his church were generously and cheerfully given.  His mother preceded him in death in 1943.  Surviving with his three children are his father, Charles Lane, brother Chester, sister Mrs. Edith Bledsoe and one grandson, Bruce Stevenson of Paoli.  We are never ready for death to claim our loved ones, and the mystery is even greater when a fine, stalwart young man is so suddenly stricken and taken from his children who need him so badly.  They were his very life and their welfare his one great interest.  God does not plan for us to understand all things but he has left us many promises that comfort our hearts.  To the loved ones we would say: tighten your loins with God's promises and keep the strong staff of faith and hope in your hand.  Trust God in your dark hours of grief.  We are safer with Him in the dark than without Him in the sunshine.  His rod and staff never break.  Why he takes our loved ones whom we need so much we know not now but we shall know hereafter.  Hebrews 13:5 says 'I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.

For Thou Art With Me

I know not when I go, nor where,
From this familiar scene;
But He is Here and He is There
and all the way between;
And when I pass from all I know
To that dim, vast, unknown,

Notes

1.       Census Data:  Rather than repeat the detail from a family census entry in each person’s record, it has been recorded only in the Head of Household record, and only the census year and location are recorded in the family member records (with a few exceptions, like adult children living with their parents).  If you are reviewing a person who is not the Head of Household, be sure to look at the Head of Household entry to see if there is additional information.

2.       Name Spelling:  Spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles, census records, etc., was often incorrect.  The spelling could be different in every place it is found.  When I report these facts for a person, I usually report the name as it was spelled, but in some cases I chose to correct the spelling.

3.       Place Naming Convention:  I use the following:  place (township, city, institution, etc.), county, state, country.  Descriptive words are only used when needed for clarification.  Here are some examples:

Orangeville Town = Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States

Orangeville Township = Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States

Genealogy research is always a work in progress.  No matter how much information you have, it is never complete.  No matter how much you check your work, it will always contain mistakes.  Please keep this in mind as you read this document.  If you can offer additional information or correct any mistakes, I would love to hear from you.
