Descendants of Maxfield Wilson
By Robert Lane

First Generation

1.       Maxfield Wilson1–2 was born between 1791 and 1795 in North Carolina, United States.

He purchased 40 acres in T1N R1W section 5 on September 5, 1838 in Orange, Indiana, United States.  This is probably about the time he immigrated to Orange County, Indiana.  Some researchers report that he immigrated in 1829-30, but this seems unlikely given his marriage date and the 1830 census.

He appeared in the census in 1830 in Guilford, North Carolina, United States.  It lists 1 male 30-40 and 1 female 20-30.  He appeared in the census in 1840 in Southwest (historical) Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists 1 male 5-10, 1 male 50-60, 2 females 0-5, 3 females 5-10 and 1 female 20-30.  He appeared in the census in 1850 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Maxfield (55), Sarah (39), Polly (18), Permelia (16), Nancy (15), Sarah (14), Elizabeth (12), Lucinda (10), Cornelia (5) and Sarah's parents William (86) and Nancy (88) Bailey.  It notes that he was blind.  He appeared in the census in 1860 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  There are two listings.  One lists Maxfield (70), Sarah (45), Polly (30), Lucinda (18) and Cornelia (14).  The other lists Maxwell (65), Sarah (50), Mary (28), Lucinda (17) and Cornelia (14).  He appeared in the census in 1870 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Maxfield (78), Polly (34) and Sarah (25).  He was listed as a pauper.  His wife Sarah was not listed.

He died before 1880.  This is based on the 1880 census, which lists Sarah as a widow.  He was buried at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.  The cemetery transcription does not list any dates.

Maxfield Wilson and Sarah Bailey were married on September 25, 1829 in Guilford, North Carolina, United States (Bond #61121, bondsman was Daniel Gillespi).  Sarah Bailey1,3, daughter of William Bailey and Nancy Jarott, was born in 1810 in North Carolina, United States.  This was based on the censuses.  The cemetery transcription lists 1801.  She appeared in the census in 1830 in Guilford, North Carolina, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1840 in Southwest (historical) Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1850 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1860 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists Sarah (79), widow, living with her daughter Cornelia.  She died in 1889 at the age of 79 in Orange, Indiana, United States.  She was buried at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

Permelia Wilson and George Washington Dalton were married on March 14, 1858 in Orange, Indiana, United States (book C-4, page 215).  George Washington Dalton1,3–4,6–8, son of Samuel Hyson Dalton and Hannah Ball, was born on October 22, 1832 in Martin, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1850 in Northwest Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1860 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists George (27), Permelia (26) and Mary (2).  He appeared in the census in 1870 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists George (37), Sylvania (25), Mary (11), Clara (2) and William (6/12) living next door to George's brother Martin.  He appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists George (47), Vernia (31), Mary (21), Clara (12), William (10), Elvira (8), Cora (7), John (5) and Zella (2).  He appeared in the census in 1900 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States. George Washington Dalton and Permelia Wilson had the following child:

6.     Elizabeth "Lizzie" Wilson1,3 was born about 1838 in Indiana, United States.  She reported March 1846 in the 1900 census, but this disagrees with the other censuses, and would make her only 10 years old when she married.

She appeared in the census in 1840 in Southwest (historical) Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1850 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1860 in Vincennes, Knox, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1880 in Vincennes, Knox, Indiana, United States.  It lists Lizzie (39), widow, Ella (14), Edward (12), Henrietta (6), Sarah (3) and Lizzie (9/12).  She appeared in the census in 1900 in Vincennes, Knox, Indiana, United States.  It lists Elizabeth (54-this is incorrect), widow, Edward and his wife Emma, and Lizzie (20).

Vols."

Seth L. Gillum and Elizabeth Wilson had the following children:

           10              i.   Laura Gillum, born about 1859.

11             ii.   Ella M. Gillum, born about 1866.

There is some uncertainty about his birth year.  His death certificate, the 1900 census and his grave stone show 1863.  However, his parents were married two months after this date.  An examination of the marriage book shows that the pages around the one for his parents were used in the same time period, so the marriage date appears to be accurate.  While it's possible that he was born out of wedlock, the pre-1900 censuses suggest that this birth year is incorrect.  According to the information his parents provided on the 1870 and 1880 censuses, his birth year would have been 1864-65.

18.  William Maxfield "Bill" Toliver1–4,9–11,13–14 was born on September 5, 1867 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States. His middle name must have been for his grandfather, Maxfield Wilson.

He was a farmer and lumberman.  James Lane related that in the early 1900's there street cars that ran between French Lick and West Baden.  William bought a car and started providing taxi service (they were called jitneys at the time) for the same price as the street cars.  This competition eventually forced the street cars out of business some time in the 1920's.

James related this story about staying with his grandparents, William and Lavinia Toliver.  Viney fixed biscuits and gravy for breakfast nearly every morning.  William would eat breakfast holding grandson Bob (Chester Robert Lane) on his knee.  They would both have gravy all over their faces.

He appeared in the census in 1870 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He appeared in the census in 1900 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (32), Vina (28), Clint (7), Nellie (5) and Clem (3) living next door to his parents and brother Andrew.  He appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (41), Lavinia (36), Clinton (17), Minnie (15), Clem (12), Amy (5) and Ermel (3).  His occupation was farm laborer.  He appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (52), Lavinia (48), Nellie (24), Clem (21), Amy (15), Ermel (13) and Hazel (6).  His occupation was rural carrier.  He appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (61), Lavina (58), Nellie (35), Amy (25), Lorena (16) and grandson Gene (5).  His occupation was taxi chauffeur.  He appeared in the census in 1940 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (72), Lavinia (68) and Lorena (26) living on Indiana Avenue.  His occupation was taxi operator.  His highest level of education was 8th grade, Lavinia's was the same.

He died on July 9, 1940 at the age of 72 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States (book BK-7, page 103).  James Lane related that in 1938 or 1939 William Toliver was helping to clear a picnic area by a spring at the back of his son-in-law Chester Lane's farm in Prospect, IN when he suffered a stroke.  He managed to crawl up a steep hill and out to the road where he was found by a passing motorist.  He was an invalid from that time until he passed away.  His death certificate reported the following: cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage, residence was French Lick, Orange, Indiana, occupation was laborer, marital status was married to Lavina Toliver.  The Springs Valley Herald (July 11, 1940) reported "William Toliver, 72, passed away at his home on Indiana Ave. Tuesday night after a long illness.  Mr. Toliver came to French Lick about seventeen years ago when he entered the taxi business.  Ill health forced him to retire several years ago.  Funeral services were held at Ames Chapel this afternoon. Burial was made in the church cemetery with W. V. Ritter & Son in charge.  He is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Harley Springer, Miss Lorena Toliver and Clem Toliver of French Lick, Mrs. Chester Lane of West Baden, Miss Nellie Toliver of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Clinton of Oklahoma."  The Springs Valley Herald (July 18, 1940) reported "William M. Toliver was born in Orange County, September 5, 1867 and departed this life July 9, 1940 at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 4 days.  He was the son of George and Cornelia Toliver and is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Mary Wilson of Indianapolis, Mrs. May Wilson of West Baden Springs, Mrs. Lucy Daily of Indianapolis, Andrew Toliver of West Baden Springs and Charles Toliver of Indianapolis.  He was united in marriage to Lavinia Elma Stackhouse, February 14, 1892.  To this union were born six children: Clinton Toliver of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nellie Toliver of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Clem Toliver of French Lick, Amy Springer of French Lick, Ermel Lane of West Baden Springs and Lorena Toliver of French Lick.  There lives to mourn his passing his wife, 6 children and 7 grandchildren.  He has long been a member of the Methodist Church having been converted under Reverend Hoon at the old West Baden Church.  To this faith he held fast throughout his lifetime and often said during his long illness that he was ready to meet his Saviour."  He was buried on July 11, 1940 at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

William Maxfield "Bill" Toliver and Lavinia Elma "Viney" Stackhouse were married on February 14, 1892 in Orange, Indiana, United States (book H-1, page 212).  They were first cousins once removed.  Siblings Elizabeth and Lavinia Stackhouse married siblings Andrew and William Toliver.  Lavinia Elma "Viney" Stackhouse1–4,9,11, daughter of Hugh A. Stackhouse and Mourning Dove Dalton, was born on September 10, 1871 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1900 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1940 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  A fragmentary memoir of Ermel Toliver Lane was found in 2017.  In it, she reported: "Nellie seemed more like a mother to us younger girls.  She took us to shows, ball games, etc., when she got a job.  Mom was always too exhausted, and short of cash.  She also endured excruciating headaches (catarrh they called it, probably migraines.)"She died on May 13, 1945 at the age of 73 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  Her death certificate reported the following: cause of death was cardiac renal disease, residence was French Lick, Orange, Indiana, occupation was housewife, marital status was widow.  She was buried at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

40             ii.   Nellie Ruth "Ned" Toliver, born February 20, 1895.

41            iii.   Clem Donald "Shorty" Toliver, born February 7, 1898.

44            vi.   Hazel Lorena Toliver, born August 1, 1913.

19.  Elizabeth Sarah "Lizzie" Toliver1–3,9–14 was born on July 30, 1869 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  The marriage index lists her as Sarah E. Toliver.

She appeared in the census in 1870 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1900 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.

She died on February 27, 1913 at the age of 43 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  Her death certificate reported the following: cause of death was gastric ulcer, occupation was housekeeper, marital status was married to William Charles.  The Springs Valley Herald (March 6, 1913) reported "Elizabeth Toliver Charles was born near Orangeville, Indiana, July 30th, 1869.  She was the daughter of George and Cornelia Wilson Toliver and was the oldest daughter of that family.  She died in the early morning of Feb. 27th, 1913, aged 43 years, 6 months and 28 days.  Lizzie grew up into a happy, wholesome, young woman.  Her gentle disposition won for her the love of everybody with whom she came in contact.  On May 3rd, 1888, she was married to Will A. Charles, who survives her.  Comparatively all of her married life was spent in the house where she died, familiarly known as the Aunt Sallie Campbell home, and there she particularly endeared herself to us all by her open heart and hospitality which was no-wise changed from former years.  Few of her friends indeed, are those who could not recall Lizzie's hearty invitations to her home, and her kindly ministry in it.  For many years she has been a consecrated Christian woman, and was a faithful member of Ames Chapel M.E. Church. Lizzie's Christian life was the kind that counts for God.  It's fruitage was that of the spirit. Galatians 5:22 reads The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.  Against such there is no law, and they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh.  And so it was with our loved one.  The husband and mother, the brothers and sisters are grief stricken.  The companionship is broken, the comforting counsel is gone, but we know that in her own suffering (and for years she bore affliction) Lizzie found not only comfort but joy in her Christian service and she would bid you turn to her Savior and make Him your comforter in these dark hours.  She would bid you rejoice in her heavenly birthday, where she has gone like stepping forth into another room, to greet her Savior and the loved ones there and to make heaven nearer to us all for her going.  There are left besides scores of friends, the husband, brothers, sisters and other relatives.  The funeral services were held at Ames Chapel on Saturday, March 1st, by her pastor Rev. O.E. Haley and Rev. Raaf, of Bloomfield, her former pastor, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining, beneath a blanket of beautiful flowers, each one a mute tribute of love for this life not lived long, but lived so well."  She was buried on March 1, 1913 at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

Elizabeth Sarah "Lizzie" Toliver and William A. "Willie" Charles were married on May 3, 1888 in Orange, Indiana, United States (book H-1. page 122).  William A. "Willie" Charles1–4,9, son of Seth Charles and Sarah E. Campbell, was born on April 17, 1866 in Orange, Indiana, United States.  John Toliver's descendants chart listed him as Charles Wilson.  However, all of the other available records make it clear that this is incorrect.  He appeared in the census in 1870 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (14) living with grandmother Sarah Field Campbell.  He appeared in the census in 1880 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  His surname was incorrectly listed as Campbell.  He appeared in the census in 1900 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (34) and Sarah (30).  He appeared in the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (44) and Lizzie (41).  The census lists them as not having any children.  He appeared in the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (52) living with his brother Wilbur.  His occupation was laborer.  He appeared in the census in 1930 in French Lick Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  It lists William (64), Martha (53) and Mary (4).  He appeared in the census in 1940 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States. It lists William (73), Martha (64) and Mary (14).  His obituary reported that Mary was adopted.  His occupation was hotel watchman.  His highest level of education was 8th grade, Martha's was the same.  This census raises questions.  FAG and the Lost River DAR transcriptions report that Martha died in 1936, but the person in this census appears to be the same one in the 1930 census,  William's obituary reports that his wife survived him, and Martha is listed on his death certificate.  Are the Martha of the censuses and the Martha of the cemetery records different people?  He died on September 8, 1940 at the age of 74 in French Lick, Orange, Indiana, United States.  The cemetery transcription posted on the Orange County USGenWeb site lists the date as July 22, 1940.  His death certificate reported the following: cause of death was uremic poisoning due to chronic hepatitis, occupation was night watchman, marital status was married.  The Springs Valley Herald (September 12, 1940) reported "William A. Charles, 74, died at his home on Adams Street Sunday, September 8th after a long illness.  Mr. Charles was born in Orange County, the son of Seth and Susan E. Charles.  He served as night watchman at the French Lick Springs Hotel for several years.  Rev. Perry Key, assisted by Rev. James Austin and Rev. Floyd Elliott, was in charge of the funeral services at Ames Chapel Tuesday afternoon, followed by interment in the church cemetery.  W. V. Ritter & Son were the funeral directors.  He leaves a wife and adopted daughter."  He was buried at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

20.  John Toliver5,9–13 was born on September 10, 1870 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  Clint Toliver credits the notes of Mae Minnie Toliver Wilson for John's birth date.  However, the cemetery transcription shows 1871-1873.  He died on September 30, 1871 at the age of 1 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He was buried at Springer Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

21.  Barney Toliver5,9–13 was born on July 19, 1872 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  Clint Toliver credits the notes of Mae Minnie Toliver Wilson for Barney's birth and death dates.  However, his grave stone shows 1875 - 1875.  He died on February 16, 1875 at the age of 2 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  He was buried at Springer Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

22.  Lucy Jane Toliver1,3–4,9–13 was born on January 18, 1874 in Orangeville, Orange, Indiana, United States.  Her death certificate reported 1871, but this conflicts with the birth of her siblings.  The 1880 census and her marriage record indicate a year of 1874, which seems more likely.  Clint Toliver said that the notes of Mae Minnie Toliver Wilson reported the year as 1881.

She appeared in the census in 1880 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1900 in Monroe Township, Clark, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1910 in Orangeville Township, Orange, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1920 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1930 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.  She appeared in the census in 1940 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.

Notes

1.       Census Data:  Rather than repeat the detail from a family census entry in each person’s record, it has been recorded only in the Head of Household record, and only the census year and location are recorded in the family member records (with a few exceptions, like adult children living with their parents).  If you are reviewing a person who is not the Head of Household, be sure to look at the Head of Household entry to see if there is additional information.

2.       Name Spelling:  The spelling of names in source documents is often incorrect, with the name being spelled the way the writer thought it sounded.  The spelling could be different in every document.  In most cases the name is reported in this document as it was written, but some gross misspellings have been corrected.
