1.      Thomas Barker Harned was born on 16 May 1798 in Hillsborough, Loudoun Co., VA. He died on 22 Aug 1884 in Columbia, IA - burial Oakdale Cemetery, Monroe Co., IA.

Thomas was born on May 16, 1798, in Loudoun Co., Virginia. He married Elizabeth Real on Apr. 26, 1821, in Crawford Co., Indiana. Thomas and Elizabeth lived near his father, William, in Orange Co., Indiana. The Harned Chapel Church now stands where Thomas lived, he donated the land for it. In the 1850 Orange Co., Indiana census the family is living in Southeast Twp., in dwelling #160. Their daughter, Mary, had died in 1849, and her husband and children were also living with them - a total of 14 in the household. The family moved to Iowa in 1861, into the neighborhood of Columbia. They finally settled a few miles northeast of that village in Marion County. A good share of the family followed by covered wagon route about the same time, and moved into the same region.

Thomas and Elizabeth both died near Columbia, she on Nov. 24, 1870, and he on Aug. 22, 1884. Thomas had remarried to Jerusha (Juriah) Wood Johnson on November 30, 1871. Thomas and Elizabeth are buried at the Oakdale Cemetary near Columbia, as are many of the other Harneds of this family. Thomas was a good, tried, and true man of God.

Excerpts from the History of Orange County Indiana that was reproduced from an original 1884 history.

From page 543:  At what is known as Harned Chapel, three miles southwest of Valeene, is another class of Methodist church, that was formed about the year 1845. The church house was built of logs and afterward weather-bearded. It is now a very comfortable building and has cost about $500, being contributed by people who lived adjacently. Thomas Harned and family, the Dillards, Sloans, Crandalls, Bateses, Stones and others were among the principal early members. Three of the Harned boys -- William, Michael, and John became noted as preachers, they first preaching at Indianapolis and Jeffersonville. This church has been prosperous and in connection with it is maintained a good Sunday school.

The Christian Church at Valeene was organized about the year 1830. Samuel Harned was among the prominent members of this society.

From page 566:  The first school established in the southeast township was situated upon the land now owned by John Agan, one mile east of Valeene. The house was a small, round log cabin. It was built for a schoolhouse by John Hollowell, Robert Breeze, and David Brown. The first teacher's name is unknown, the second was named Cantrell, and he was succeeded by John Harned about the year 1817. About the year 1815 a log-cabin schoolhouse was built near John Buchanan's farm in the southwest corner of the township. This house had fence corner fireplace, puncheon floor and open windows. The first teacher was named Willis. He was succeeded by Thomas Harned about the year 1818. The Harneds attended schools here - also in schools west of Rock Spring Church, one east of Harned's Chapel, and one south of Valeene.

She later joined this church at a preaching place where Harned Chapel now stands in Orange Co., Indiana. She lived a devoted life and a happy death.During her illness, which lasted only about one week, she talked calmly of death; being asked by some of her children if she felt any fear of death, she answered,"He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures." Speaking of her son William - a member of the Indiana Conference - she said, "Tell him I died in the faith." She was then asked by one of her sons if she was ready to go and she answered,"Ready, ready, ready" and soon after she fell asleep in Jesus................E.A. Winning
