James & Mary (Polly) Henderson of Greenville SC, Chatham NC
& Orange County IN

James and his forebears for four generations, dating back to at least 1730 in America, were farmers, as were his descendents for the next 2-3 generations.
Shortly after the Civil War, Orange County residents began moving west and north as all the available land in Orange County farm land was taken or was divided
into too small of parcels to be economical to farm. The outward migration continued to accelerate thru the 20th century. By the end of the 20th century, there
was only one Henderson family left in Orange County. As will be seen below, life was especially cruel to the daughters of Mary and James Henderson.

(James's forbearers: James, James Isaac & Mary (Rhodes), Argulus Hercules & Mary (Clark), Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Brasher) )

James was born in Greenville Dist SC Mar 6, 1788 to Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Brasher) Henderson Co. Ezekiel was born in Chatham NC, Elizabeth in Greenville, the
daughter of Thos L and Elizabeth Brasher of Guilford Co, NC. Ezekiel was an American Revolutionary War soldier, Argulus was a Regulator in NC and reputedly
took part in the 1771 Alamance Courthouse battle (leading up to the American Revolution). ( Six of Argulus' compatriots were hung by the British)

Generation 1
James b. 1788 Greenville Dist SC d. 1858 Orange IN, buried Millis Family Cemetery
Mary Unk b. ca 1788 Chatham NC ? died 1839 Orange IN, buried Old Union?

The date and place of birth and parents of his wife Mary ("Polly") are unknown, but is assumed to be North Carolina. In records she is referred to as both
Mary and Polly. Her children are consistent in listing her as a native of NC. Likely buried at Old Union, no marker.

James was the only descendent of Argulus Hercules Henderson (father of Ezekiel) to move North, the others, including their wives' families either remained in
NC, SC or moved to MS, AL, GA, and KY(Todd & Christian Co). My guess is James and Mary moved either because they opposed slavery or more likely because members
of Mary's family also moved to Orange County, IN. Why James lived in NC for a short period after leaving home is a mystery. (See later paragraph for a
supposition)

In the census of 1810, James, Mary and their daughter Margaret are shown living in, Chatham Co, N.C. James Henderson, 1 wh. Male under 26, 1 wife
under 26, and l dau. under 1.

This is in line with the known ages of all three and the fact that James is not in the Greenville Census for 1810 nor in the Chatham census after 1810. Before
moving to Orange Co. IN, their second child, John was born in NC in 1812. Sometime thereafter and before the birth of their second son William, born in 1815,
they moved to Orange Co. IN.

By 1815 they are living in Orange Co, IN, where in Dec, James bought 160 acres in northern Paoli Twp. (TWP 2N, R 1 W, E of NE, Sec 15). This land is located at
the SW intersection of 325N & 200W, about 2 mi SW of the Old Union Church. In 1829 purchased land in Sec 12 ( Twp 2 N R1 W, SE Sec 12) in Orleans Twp, from
David Hudleson. In total, he owned 169 acres in Sec 12, which, upon his death he left 84 acres to his wife, 45 to John, and the remainder to sons Wm and Henry.
This land is at the present NW intersection of Hwy 37 and Co Rd 400N. In his will, he also named wife Sarah, daughthers Eliza and Sophia, and Granddaughter
Elzora (dau of Nancy)

James voted in the 1816 election and was listed in the 1820 enumeration of Males. The other Hendersons voting and listed were not related to this James
Henderson.

In the census of 1820 James is listed as 200010, 20010, Farmer.

All of the known 1st & 2nd Generation Hendersons are buried either at Millis Cemetery (Sec 18, 12NR1E1) or Old Union Cem. (Sec 2. T2NR1) Millis Cem, on the
old Millis Farm was located 1 mile east of Hwy 37 on Cty Rd 350 N.

Prior to 1829, Methodists held their meetings at the home of Samuel Webb and United Brethren held theirs at the home of Jacob Elrod. In 1829, upon the
completion of the first UBC at the site of the present Old Union UMC, the two groups joined together there. Old Union is located 1 mile W. of Hwy 37 on Cty
Rd 490 N. The early Henderson's and their related families take up about ½ of the old section of the cemetery. In the will o f James W. he referred to it as
the "Henderson Section" of the United Brethren Church at Old Union and left money to the church for its upkeep.

Some notes on Mary, wife of James - 1st Gen. She was b. ca 1788, probably in Chatham or Guilford NC, maybe Greenville Dist SC. She was not known to be, as
some researchers claim, a Florence or Harrison. I assume the Florence came from the middle name of some of her Granddaughters-Florence was a popular name at
the time and that Florence Bartell lived with the John Hendersons as a boarder in the 1870s. As to Harrison, I assume that came from her son Henry Harrison,
actually named after Wm. Henry Harrison, a popular IN governor at the time. Henry Harrison was a popular name. However, there were a lot of Harrisons in
Greenville, SC and Ezekiel mentioned on of them, John H. Harrison as a friend. From both he and his father's will, there is no apparent relationship to Mary
Henderson.
Lorenzo Dow Henderson was named after the popular minister Lorenzo Dow.
If Mary was a Quaker, then when she married out of union, she would have been disowned and her records likely erased. This happened with Caroline Hannah Lee
(wife of Wm. L. Henderson). There are no Quaker records of her, but there are of her siblings (good Quakers). I only found Caroline's (Quaker) parents by way
 of her death certificate.

Why would James move to /go to Chatham Co NC? Argulus, James's grandfather died in 1804/1806 (will dated 1804, probated 1806) bequeathing Ezekiel a slave.
Young James would have been 18 years old in 1806. The distance from Pittsboro to Greensboro District is about 210 miles - good distance back then, but over
well established roads. A great adventure for someone of James's age. James could have made the trip to pick up the "property", stayed with his grandmother
Mary ( and been smitten with a local girl?), to return later or perhaps he stayed there. Ezekiel, James' father is in the 1800 and 1820 census for Greenville,
but not in the 1810 census - an error or did Ezekiel for a time live in Todd or Christian Co. KY or Chatham NC?. Maybe this is why/when James left home.

Relationship with Crawford Co IL: Crawford Co is next to Knox Co IN, and probably opened to settlement after Orange Co IN. Several Orange Co residents moved
there, including Quakers Owen Lindley, Hollowell (from NC to Orange IN 18165 to Crawford 1818) and others. David Henderson moved there, then his son moved back
to Orange. Probably Wm, s/o James (subject of this document) also moved there as he had two children born there in the 1840's. Wm then moved back to Orange Co
as did some of David's children. This could indicate either the desire for new land or to be near relatives.
From records, some Chatham Co NC Quakers went directly to Crawford Co, so as with Orange Co IN, Crawford appears to have been another Quaker "settling place".

Notes on other unrelated Orange County Hendersons (Many came, went, or stayed-some of the early ones were actually in Lawrence Co, a part of Orange Co in 1816):
Land Patents, Ambrose, Richard, Wm.
1816 Ezekiel
1816 Archibald m. Elizabeth Roberts
1817 Franky m. Isaac Frost
1820 Richard and Ezekiel
1830 William, Orran (wife Rebecca Hart), Richard

1870 David & Elizabeth, Thos& Nancy, from KY
1870 Sarah, native of NC age 65
1870 Ollie Henderson age 22, living with James and Ellen Henderson (James' Brother?)
1870 Elizabeth, age 37, native of KY, children Wm, McClellan, Willard
Mary and Rebecca Henderson, these are Greenfield Twp Hendersons, born in KY.

Richard and his relatives came to Orange Co from Madison Co KY.

Some relationships of the "other Hendersons" Ezekiel, lived in Lawrence Co, was the father of James and Wm (w. Fanny), Wm was the father of John E. (w. Mary
Spencer), and were the parents of George (b. 1838).
