WELLS

This listing is a compilation of all those Welles who lived in Orange County prior to 1900. They are taken from census, marriage, death, birth, cemetery and any other records that were available to me. There are no doubt some people listed more than once, since, if I could not verify that those of the same name were actually the same person, I left them in separately. There are undoubtedly mistakes, so it should be used as a guide, not as gospel. If you should discover errors, please inform me so that they can be corrected, but do include documentation.
The report format did not allow room to include sources, but they are the standard Orange County documents mentioned above. Many of the events were taken from the GenWeb pages on marriages, deaths, etc. Others were from the census compilations done by Mrs. Davis. Some were from the Dwight Young book on the Pirtle family, which contains many Wells records. Others were from my own genealogy work on my Wells line.
There are at least two separate Wells branches in the county's history. One (which is my own), is that of progeny of Quakers Joseph and Charity Carrington of North Carolina. This branch includes Nathan (Rev. War vet), his brother Joseph, sister Mary (Levi) Gifford, and the descendants of their brother, John. John died in Tennessee, but his grandson Enos Wells came to Orange Co. in the 1840's.
The other line is that of Abraham and Lucy, who came to Orange Co. from Kentucky. These are the two separate lines that I am aware of. No doubt there are others unrelated to these two lines in 19th century Orange Co. Indiana. I have included all regardless of their origin.
