GRAVE OF ELIJAH HAWHEE

From the Cemetery Records compiled by the Lost River Chapter DAR

Transcribed by Karen Hugo

Jackson Township Section, 15, T1S R2W Obliterated.

In the northeast quarter of the section, on the Carter Parks farm, where the Hawhee family once lived, this stone was found leaning against a tree, evidently near the grave site, all trace of which is gone. Elijah Hawhee was killed during the Civil War, and a few months later his brother, William Smith Hawhee, was killed. The father brought the bodies home. Smith is buried at Moore’s Ridge Cemetery. Inscription on stone is viz:

Elijah, son of A. and E. Hawhee, Died 8 Oct 1862, age 19y/8m/21d.
He was in Co. I. 38th Reg. Inf.
