He was captured at Brices Cross Road 6-10-1864, was in prison at Cahaba, AL, then was sent to Andersonville, he was on the Sultana steamboat when it exploded 4-27-1865. He survived and came home to marry Polly Jane Flick and have 6 children, James, John, Nathan, Anna, George and Ottis. When Polly died he married Ellen Cox. Jesse died at the age of 37 from effects he suffered in the War.

Reference*: IN ADG RPT, 93rd INF: 512 Place Captured: Guntown, Mississippi Date Captured: 6/10/1864 Alternate Names: Status: SURVIVED ANDERSONVILLE ALSO HELD AT CAHABA ALABAMA Jesse Newton Gass Jr. Jesse Newton Gass Jr. was born June 24, 1843 in Jackson County, Tennessee, the son of Jesse Newton Gass Sr. and Sarah Bray. He was listed in the 1850 and 1860 census of Jackson County, TN. Which means he came to Indiana between 1860 and 1861 as he was a member of the Company H, Ninety-Third Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry Roll. Jesse was 19 years old when he was captured at Guntown, Alabama. His 26 year old brother, Nathan J. was also captured with him. Jesse came home to Orange County, Indiana and married Polly Jane Flick, daughter of Thomas Flick and Letitia Williams on November 30, 1865. They had the following children; James Thomas 1866 (married Hulda Jane Cox), John R. 1867 (married Julia Owen), Nathan Jackson 1869 ( died 1891 ) have found no wife for him, Anna Belle 1870 (married David Thomas Parks) George William 1873, died 1874, Otto Monroe 1875 (married Mary Frances Flick) Polly Jane died in 1878, leaving an ailing husband and 5 children, the oldest being 12 years old.. In 1880 Jesse died and the children went to various relatives. In the 1880 Census, James was living with his Uncle George W. Flick, John was with his Uncle John Flick, Nathan living with his grandparents Thomas and Letitia Flick, Anna Belle was taken into the home of Tommy Kellams and raised as one of his own, George William died young, and Otto Monroe listed as Ottis m. in the 1880 Census as living with his grandparents Thomas and Letitia Flick.(married Mary Flick) After Polly Jane died, Jesse remarried, Ellen Cox in 1878 and had one son October 3, 1879 who died in at the age of 17 days and is buried at Cane Creek. Jesse died in 1880 from the effects of his wounds suffered in the Civil War. He is buried at Cane Creek Cemetery in Orange County, Indiana beside his wife, Polly Jane.
