Lillian Cave

Lillian I. Emmons Cave passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 2014. She was 88 years old and residing at Medco Health & Rehabilitation Center in French Lick, Indiana, at the time of her death.
Lillian’s funeral services will be held at 10:00, Monday morning, March 10, at the T. L. Pinnick Mortuary in French Lick. Rev. Randy McNeely, a former minister of hers at the First Baptist Church of West Baden, will officiate the services. Burial will follow at Ames Chapel Cemetery. Visitation hours for Lillian will be 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at the mortuary.
Lillian was born on November 23, 1925, in West Baden Springs, Indiana, to Ernest L. and Ola Young Beaty. She was the oldest of ten children born to Ernest and Ola. Lillian attended West Baden Elementary and High Schools. She married John D. Emmons in 1944, and he passed away in 1970. She later married James Ed Cave, in 1972, and he, too, preceded her in death, in 1984.
She was a homemaker and also worked outside of the home most of her life. She worked many different jobs but her favorite employment was in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, where she could help take care of other people. Lillian’s most recent job was at the Paoli Convalescent Center in Paoli, Indiana. The job she probably enjoyed the most—and definitely the one she talked about most—was in the obstetrics ward at Orange County Hospital in Paoli.
Most of Lillian’s 88 years were spent in the Springs Valley area. She lived for short periods of time in Florida, but she always returned to the place she called home. She last resided at the Schoolview Apartments in French Lick, before moving to Medco.
Lillian was a very social person; she loved people and never met a stranger. This is one reason she was such a great caregiver. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to people, Lillian also loved dogs. She had at least one for a pet (usually more than one!) most of her life. She also really liked gardening—especially flower gardening. Roses were her favorite flower, and she was still growing and tending to them until just a couple of years ago. She liked reading and sewing, but her favorite hobby was probably dancing. She loved to dance and was still dancing well into her eighties.
A member of the First Baptist Church of West Baden most of her life, Lillian had been unable to attend regular church services for the past couple of years. She did attend services at Medco, and her faith remained strong. She was, for the most part, a very positive person. She had a great sense of humor and could be seen laughing and giggling so much of the time.
Granmommy, as Lillian was known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John “Butch” and Suzanne Emmons, of West Baden; her daughter LuAnn Kull of Buffalo, NY; a granddaughter, Shelby (Jay) Hughes, of West Baden; a grandson, Joby (Marion) Emmons of New York City, NY; another grandson, Josh (Cassie) Kull, of Buffalo, NY; another granddaughter, Mendy Hayden of Paoli; and five great-grandchildren. Four of her nine siblings also survive Lillian: Richard (Ellen) Beaty of West Baden; Joyce Jones of Loogootee, Indiana; Bonnie DeWeese of French Lick; and Connie Hollen of Garland, Texas. Lillian also leaves behind several nephews and nieces and many friends.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; a daughter Kathy Lynne Emmons and a son, Billy Max Emmons; three brothers, Jack, Marvin, and Douglas Beaty; and two sisters, Juanita Robbins Newlin and Mary Ernestine Beaty.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P O Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Medco Health & Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care of, and compassion for, Lillian.

Norman White

After an extended illness, Norman Curtis White, 96, died on July 15, 2013 in Santa Maria, California. A memorial service will be held at a later date in French Lick, Indiana.
Born and raised on a farm in Dalton, Arkansas, Curtis learned to be self reliant and was a dutiful son. He was educated in a one-room school and exhibited remarkable understanding of scientific principles and mechanical processes. For example, at nine years of age, he fabricated in his father's workshop a working, small-scale, steam-driven sawmill. He independently created a formula to predict the swinging period of a pendulum. In time, he discovered other talents, entertaining others by wire walking and riding a bicycle while playing the violin. He had two patents on inventions, and continued his efforts to perfect a self-adjusting, mechanical sail, well into his nineties.
He worked his way through Anderson College (Anderson, Indiana) for Bachelor of Theology and Bachelor of Science degrees, also earning a private pilot's license. While attending Anderson, he met and married another student, Marian Baker.
After graduation, he pastored a church in Peoria, Illinois, but was drafted into the Navy during the closing days of World War II. He was discharged at war's end while still in boot camp.
He began his teaching career in Missouri but soon moved to the drier climate of New Mexico for Marian's health. He earned his Master of Arts degree in education at New Mexico A&M (now New Mexico State University). Until his retirement in 1979 at Walnut Creek, California, he was an elementary schoolteacher and a remedial reading specialist. He and Marian, also a teacher, bought her family's farm in southern Indiana, where they enjoyed their new-found freedom among her family and schoolmates.
Curtis was a formidable checker juggernaut and an avid traveler, who with Marian, pulled an RV trailer through most of the United States and Canada. He loved motorcycles and survived several harrowing wrecks. He continued riding until age seventy-five.
After teaching himself to play violin as a young boy, Curtis maintained a life-long appreciation for old fiddle tunes. He taught his children the rudiments of music and took pride in their performances. Curtis also played regularly in church-related programs at the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church in French Lick, Indiana.
Curtis was a man of principle and a moral example to his children. He was a reliable, respected neighbor. To his loving wife of sixty years, Marian, whom he always called “Sally,” because she laughed at the way that he pronounced her real name, he was a dependable, supportive husband. And later, to his fellow residents at The Santa Maria Terrace, he was known as that unbeatable checker player, Curtis, who plays the fiddle in the lobby.
Curtis' wife, Marian Pearl Baker, died in 2002. He also outlived his father, James Madison White; his mother, Effie Azalea Baker; his sister, Clara Blanche Bolin; and his brother, Olin Carl White.
Curtis White is survived by his daughter Faythe Anita Rittenhouse of Shawsville, Virginia; his daughter Joy Jean Jacobsen of Edmonds, Washington; and his son David Dean White of Nipomo, California. Four grandchildren also survive him: Lisa McCloud and Chad Jacobsen of Seattle, Washington; Amanda White of Vancouver, Washington; and Hannah White of Salt Lake City, Utah.
T.L. Pinnick Mortuary, French Lick, Indiana is in charge of all arrangements.
