FREEDOM -- Richard D. Herrington, 82, of Freedom, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at his home,
surrounded by his family. He was born September 20, 1925, in Owen County, to Jesse and Julia (Keller) Herrington.
He was a graduate of Coal City High School. He was a decorated Army veteran of WWII, receiving five Bronze Stars.
Richard retired from Crane as a machinist in 1986. He was a member of the Freedom Nazarene Church and the Worthington VFW.
Mr. Herrington is survived by his wife of 62 years, Abbie (Sherrow) Herrington; a son, Mike Herrington of
Freedom; five daughters, Sue (Tom) Curl of Bloomington, Rita Herrington (Jim) of Bloomington, Judy (Ron) Hayes
of Brazil, Lori (Kenny) Cooper of Freedom and Jennifer (Mike) Knapp of Spencer; four brothers,
Everett Herrington of Worthington, Charles Herrington of Martinsville, Robert Herrington of Spencer
and Jerry Herrington of Gosport; and a sister, Barbara Jean Sheese of Freedom; 14 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Jim Herrington; three sisters, Joanne Stahl, Irene Truax and Merva Rice;
and a great-grandson, Elijah Griffith.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2007, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer.
Burial will follow at Pleasant Bethel Cemetery, where military graveside services will be provided by the Worthington VFW,
Spencer American Legion and Spencer VFW. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Dick brought home from WWII several medals and a renewed respect for the sacred value of life. His expression of this value
was found in the loving care he provided for his wife, family, children, grandchildren and others he nurtured like family.
The many lives he touched by his kindness and generosity has made the world a much better and gentler place.
