Charles William Thompson, Sr., 96, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012 at West River Health Campus. He was born in Vanderburgh Co, IN on May 20, 1916 to Otto and Bertha (Menner) Thompson.

Charles served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He worked at Hahn Inc. for over 32 years and also owned and operated Idabell’s BBQ with his late wife. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Conservation Club, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Rifle Association. Charles enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Idabell (Simmons) Thompson; daughter in law, Marilyn Kaye Thompson; great grandsons, Kyle and Robert Helm; brothers, Robert and Dora Thompson; sister, Dorothy Melton. Charles is survived by his children, Charlotte Schmitt (Joe), Ed Thompson, Joe Thompson, Charles “Bill” Thompson (Judy); grandchildren, Charles Thompson, Nathalie Elderkin, Erica Thomas, Billy Thompson, Joseph Schmitt, Kathryn Jones, Edward Schmitt, Heather Helm, Sarah Stiggers, Rodney Thompson, and Shane Thompson; 20 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Grant.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday November 20, 2012 at Schneider Funeral Home 512 Main St. in Mt. Vernon with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, November 19, 2012 at the funeral home.
