ELSIE ALLYN BLACKBURN

 

April 7, 1953

Mrs. Elsie Allyn Blackburn, wife of Herschel Blackburn and a respected, life-long resident of the Mt. Vernon community, died at her home at 707 E Fourth street at 7:40 o'clock Thursday (2 Apr 1953) evening.

 

She was a representative of two prominent pioneer Posey county families and was the daughter of George Allyn and Matilda Mills Allyn.  Her church affiliation was with the Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church and she had carried her Christian tenets into her daily life in a manner that won her the respect and love of a wide circle of friends.

 

Mrs. Blackburn had been ill for eight weeks and her death was attributed to complications that followed gallbladder surgery six weeks ago in an Evansville Hospital.

 

The body is at the Short Funeral Home and will remain there through the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Short chapel.  Friends are invited to call at the chapel beginning this evening.  Rev. Rodney Holder, Owensville, Ind, a former pastor of Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church will be the officiating minister.  Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery at Bufkin.

 

Surviving in addition to the husband who is a former Black township trustee, are two daughters, Mrs. W. Gilbert Goodwin, Lynn township, and Mrs. Manford E. Stein, Mt. Vernon; two sons, Jay Blackburn, Evansville and Fred Blackburn, Cincinnati; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Winters, Evansville and Mrs. Wilbur Owens, Owensboro, Ky.

 

Mrs. Blackburn was an active member of Helen Rebekah lodge and Harrow Relief Corps for many years.
