Champlin, Sanford Dennis   

 

MOUNT VERNON - Sanford Dennis Champlin, age 79, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at New Harmonie Healthcare in New Harmony, Ind.

 

He was born on Aug. 20, 1927 in Chicago, the son of the late Sanford W. and Jessie (Houston) Champlin. He was a retired cement mason and had been a jailer at the Posey County Jail.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 54 years, Patricia R. (Chapman) Champlin in 2003, a sister, Mert Gottman, and two brothers, Robert P. Champlin and Hack Howes.

 

San-D was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon and a World War II Army veteran where he was a member of the 793rd MP's. He was a member of American Legion Owen Dunn Post No. 5, VFW No. 1164, Masonic Lodge East Denver No. 160, and the Scottish Rite of Evansville.

 

Surviving are his two children, Sanford "Scott" Champlin and his wife, Adele, of New Harmony, and Donna U. Schlegelmilch and her husband, Rick of Bedford, Texas; his four grandchildren, Chris and wife, Maria Cantrell of Aurora, Colo., Cory Cantrell and fiancee, Rhonda Simms of Crossville, Ill., Nick Champlin of Des Moines, Iowa, and Samuel Champlin of New Harmony; and three stepgrandchildren, John, Brittany and Jenna Midgley; and two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Nicole Cantrell. He is also survived by two sisters; Marge Shepard of Benton, Ill., and Janet Schmidt of Benton, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St., Mount Vernon, with Rev. Shane O'Neill officiating, burial in Bellefontaine Cemetery, with military rites.

 

Visitation is 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schneider Funeral Home, where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to service time on Thursday.
