LEMUEL P CULLEY

Lemuel P Culley, 77, a respected native Mt. Vernon-ite and a retired hostler of Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad by whom he was employed 35 years died at 8:45 a.m. today at his home at 709 W. Eighth street.

 

A complication of diseases that produced illness for the last two years was fatal.

 

Since the death of his wife, Emma gill Culley, in 1947, Mr. Culley had made his home with his son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer (Turp) Bergstrome at the West Eighth street address.

 

The deceased was born in Mt. Vernon, a son of Elza Culley and Nancy Bell Cully.  Except for a 10 year residence in Texas he had lived his entire life in Mt. Vernon.

 

Mt. Culley was a member of Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church; Mt. Vernon lodge, No. 49, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Beulah lodge, No. 578, Free & Accepted Masons.

 

The body is at the Short Niehaus Funeral Home.  It will remain there through the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Short-Niehaus chapel.  Rev. Chester Laymon, pastor of the General Baptist Church will be the officiating minister.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frank B. Stiker, Evansville, and Mrs. Bergstrom, Mt. Vernon; two grandchildren, Donald and Gerald Bergstrom, and several nieces and nephews.
