Uel T. Fox, 72, a retired watchmaker and jeweler, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday (15 Mar 1955) at his new home at 1200 East Second street.
His health had failed in the last year but he had not been
bedfast. Death came very suddenly and unexpectedly.
Failing health prompted his retirement early last fall after
operation of Fox Jewelers at 220 Main street for 14 years .
He had been a watchmaker for 40 years and for a short period after his
location in Mt. Vernon in 1937 owned and operated a food store
at Second and Main streets.
The body is at the Weisinger Funeral
Home and will remain there through the funeral service set for 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Weisinger
chapel. Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery. Officiating
clergymen will be Rev. J. Kenneth Forbes, minister of First Methodist Church, and Rev. Arthur Blackburn, a retired
General Baptist minister. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted.
Surviving are the wife, Clarissa; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Cyril
Newman, New
Harmony and
Mrs. Ella Marie Happel, Evansville; two brothers, Elmer and William H. Fox,
Evansville, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Sisk, Little Rock, Ark; Mrs. Martha Jane Franklin, Tucson, Ariz; and Mrs. Orie
Fox, Madisonville, Ky.
The deceased had been very active in the Masonic and Odd Fellow
fraternities for many years. He recieved
his Master Mason degree from Shelburn, In., lodge No.
369, F. & A.M. in 1911. At the time of his death he was a
member of Beulah lodge, No. 578, Mt. Vernon; Sunbeam chapter, No. 1, Order of
Eastern Star; the Evansville Scottish Rite Consistory, and Mt. Vernon lodge, No. 49, I.O.O.F.
A native of Missouri, a son of Burgess Uel
Fox and Nancy Robinson Fox, he spent his boyhood in the vicinity of Providence, Ky., before coming to Indiana. He came to Mt. Vernon from Shelburn,
In., and his first wife, nee Catherine Reddish, died here in 1942.
