GREENE GIVENS

Pleasant Greene Givens, life-long resident of the Mt. Vernon community and a representative of a pioneer local family, died unexpectedly at 2 a.m. today at his home at 7l8    E. Fourth St.  He would have been 74 years old on Tuesday of the coming week.

 

He had been ill for seven years following a stroke of paralysis but his condition had not been viewed as critical in recent weeks.

 

Mr. Givens was a former member of the custodial staff of Mt. Vernon school city, a position he held for 17 years prior to his illness.

 

Previous to his empoyment by the school city he was a Black township farmer and for a number of years was employed by the former Klein & Wasem Grovery in Mt. Vernon.

 

He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church.

 

The body is at the Short Niehaus Funeral Home and will remain there through the funeral service to be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday by Rev. E. P. Nay, First christian Church minister, in theShort-Niehaus chapel.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.

 

Surviving are the wife, Elva Orman Givens; three sons, Charles O. Givens, Mt. Vernon manager of the Mt. Vernon plant of Advance Manufacturing Co., Albert  L. Givens, Evansville, and George S. Givens, Alexandria, La; a daughter Mrs. O. E. Stancil, Kansas City, Mo., and eight grandchildren.
