HORACE E GREATHOUSE

Dec 13 1956

Horace E. Greathouse, 72, a life-long West Lynn township farmer whose integrity and friendly personality had endeared him to many, died at 6 a.m. today at his home on R. R. 1, New Harmony.

Death, the result of carcinoma, came to him in the same dwelling where he was born and had spent his entire life.  He underwent surgery last March and recovered sufficiently to be up and about.  Two weeks ago, he became seriously ill.

The deceased's father and mother were of pioneer Posey county families.  His father, Francis M. Greathouse, a native of Point township, was a Union Army captain in the Civil War.  His mother was before her marriage Margaret French, a native of Lynn township.

Early this month, Mr. Greathouse resigned as farm manager and treasurer of the Alexandrian Poor White Orphans Fund, a position that he had held successfully for more than 30 years.

He was a staunch Republican and a party worker much of his lifetime.

His fraternal affiliation was with the Masonic order and he was a member of Arctic (New Harmony) lodge, No. 394, Free & Accepted Masons, and Mt. Vernon chapter, No. 73, Royal Arch Masons.

The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon where friends may call after 7 o'clock this evening.

Rev. Edward Couch, pastor of Bethesda General Baptist Church at Savah, will conduct the funeral service at Weisinger chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Beech Grove cemetery in West Lynn township with Masonic rites at the grave.

Surviving are the wife, nee Elizabeth Pritchard; two daughters, Mrs. Carlton Carnahan, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Daniel James, New York City; a son, Horace F. Greathouse, R. R. 1, New Harmony; five grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. C. J. Nelson, Orlando, Fla.
