Harold W. Gwin, 59, whose affable
personality and friendly interest in his many associations with the public had
endeared him to the Mt. Vernon community during 14 years of local
residence, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday (9 Jul 1957) at his home on R. R. 2 northeast of Mt. Vernon.
He became ill of the cirrhosis of the liver last December and was
granted a leave of absence by Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op Assn. from his position
as head caretaker of Indiana Farm Bureau Refinery park
in February.
In that capacity and previously as an employee of Mt. Vernon cafe's and
manager of Mt. Vernon Elks Club he made many contacts with the public who were
impressed with his quiet, pleasant disposition. A veteran of World War I,
he was employed in the Evansville Shipyard during World War Ii.
Prior to his coming to Mt. Vernon he was a restaurant owner-operator in Benton, Ill.
The body is at Short-Niehaus Funeral
Home. Rev. Temas Taylor, pastor of Mt. Vernon
General Baptist church, will conduct the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Short-Niehaus
chapel. Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery and Owen Dunn post No. 5
American Legion, will conduct graveside rites.
Surviving are
the wife, he former June Coddington, whom he married April
19, 1954; a
daughter, Mrs. John C. Benton, R. R. 1. Wadesville; three grandchildren; a
sister, Mrs. William Mc Dermott, Springfield, Ill; a half brother, Ogle Conner, West Frankfort, Ill., and two half-sisters, Mrs. Thomas Maxwell,
Eldorado, Ill., and Mrs. Jo Wy- (article incomplete)
