HAROLD W JOHNSON

Harold W. Johnson, one of Hoosierdom's most active American Legionaries and a Mt. Vernon post office clerk since 1942, died at 8:15 o'clock Monday (24 Sep 1956) night at his home at 1241 Main street.  He was 61 years old last Sept 9.

 

Few Mt. Vernon Legionaries had attained more prominence than the late deceased in affairs of the patriotic organization on local state and national levels.  He was Eighth district American Legion Commander in the fiscal year 1950-51, a past commander of Owen Dunn post No. 5, and served with distinction on numerous local district and state committees.

 

The body is at Short-Niehaus Funeral Home where friends may call beginning this evening.

 

The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Short-Niehaus chapel.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.  The officiating clergyman will be Rev. Temas Taylor, pastor of Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church.  The deceased's beloved Owen Dunn post will conduct graveside rites.

 

Death followed failing health for two years and serious illness for the last few weeks.  During his long period of sickness he had been a patient in Midwestern Veterans Administration Hospitals on several occasions.

 

Survivors of the very popular Mt. Vernon man are his wife nee Victoria Vallier, whose marriage to the deceased took place 37 years ago in North Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. William Mitchell, Haubstadt, In, and Mrs. Malvern Redman, Mt. Vernon,; five grandchildren; two brothers, William F. Johnson, a veteran State Conservation Department officer, residing at Marion, Ind., and Keith Johnson, Evansville, and two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Blackburn, R. R. 3, Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. William T. Ungard, Xenia, Ohio.

 

The deceased was born on the Johnson farm homestead east of Farmersville.  His parents were Sylvanus Johnson and Emma Smith Johnson, representatives of pioneer Posey county families.

 

Following graduation from Mt. Vernon High school, he attended Purdue University and Valley City College in Valley City, N.D.  From the North Dakota school he entered the teaching profession in North Dakota and later entered the U.S. Postal Service in Mercer, N.D.

 

During World War I he was in military service serving in the Army in Europe.

 

It was during his residence in North Dakota that he met and married Victoria Vallier, then a resident of Oberson, N.D.

 

In 1937, Mr. Johnson and his family returned to Posey County and he was employed for several years by Hoosier Cardinal in Evansville.  In 1942, he returned to the Post service and became a clerk in the Mt. Vernon post office.

 

In addition to his membership in the American Legion, the deceased was a member of Beulah lodge, No. 578, Free & Accepted Masons, Mt. Vernon lodge of Elks, Posey aerie of Eagles and Evansville Voiture of the 40 & 8.

 

He came of a long line of Democrats and although he never sought public office he was active in party affairs.

 

His general capabilities his loyalty to friends and his genial disposition had endeared him to the Mt. Vernon community.
