WILLIAM A JOHNSON

Dec 27, 2006

NEW HARMONY - William A. (Bill) Johnson, 81, formerly of New Harmony, and the brother of Charles S. (Choppy) Johnson and his wife, Vera, of New Harmony, passed away on Dec. 27, 2006, in St. Augustine, Fla., after a lengthy illness of kidney disease.

Bill graduated from New Harmony High School in 1943. After serving in the Army Signal Corps, in both the European and Pacific theatres during World War II, he graduated from the University of Missouri and pursued a career in the insurance field that led to a move to Jacksonville, Fla. in the late 1950s.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed fishing with his son, golfing and dancing with friends, and working around the beach house. Bill and his wife, Kay, spent many winters in their mobile home on the family farm in New Harmony, hunting with his brother and nephews, spending time with their niece, watching their great-nieces play basketball and going out with old friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Katharine (Kay) Johnson; his parents, Alvin P. and Geraldine S. Johnson, and an infant brother.

He is also survived by his son, Robert Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of St. Augustine; one niece, Judy K. Stallings, of New Harmony; two nephews, Rick Johnson and his wife, Debra, of New Harmony and Jim Johnson and his wife, Beverly, of Dallas, Texas; grand-nieces and nephews, Mary, Amy and Lori Stallings, Lesa Trela, Alisha Noffsker, Timothy Kahle and Adam Morgan; great-great-nephew Bryson Ford Trela and special friend, Pat Hendrix, of Jacksonville.

Graveside services will be held on Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m., with full military rights, at Maple Hill Cemetery in New Harmony.

Family and friends are invited to Johnson United Methodist Church immediately after burial services.
