*CLERK LUMM*

Jan 17, 1957

Lawrence A “Clerk” Lumm, 41 year old
Griffin resident, treasurer of Posey county from
1952 to 1957, since Jan 1 Posey county and Circuit court clerk and
leader in Democratic politics was instantly killed early Sunday (
13 Jan 1957) morning
in an accident involving only his auto.

Alone in his 1955 Chevrolet sedan and in route to his home in
Griffin
from
Evansville where he had attended the Posey county high school
basketball tournament at Mater Die gymnasium, Clerk Lump's auto crashed
dead-center into the north concrete abutment of
Gresham creek bridge east of
New Harmony on State Road 66 (U.S. 460) Posey County Coroner Ferrule J.
Meinschein,
Mt. Vernon fixed the time of death at 3:15 a.m.

The body of the tragedy’s victim was moved today from Shoultz Werry
Funeral Home in
New Harmony to the home of a sister of the deceased,
Mrs. Nimroad McDonald, in
Griffin, where friends may call.

The funeral service will be at
2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the
Christian Church in
Griffin of which the deceased was a member.  Burial
will be in
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Griffin.  Ref. Fred Keim, minister
of Griffin Christian Church, will be the officiating minister.

Posey county court house offices will close at
noon Tuesday for the
remainder of the day.
Mt. Vernon city building offices likewise will be
closed.

Deputy Circuit Clerk Mrs. Georgianna Kern
Griffin, and Ex-Circuit Clerk
Guy
Cleveland today were on duty in the clerk's office pending Appointee
Hanes' qualifying.

Surviving the late public official are the mother; Mrs. Edith Hanshoe
Lumm,
Griffin; two sisters, Mrs. McDonald, griffin, a teacher at West
Franklin school in Marrs township, and Mrs. Virgil Taylor, Lynn township
who resides on the Leonard Lumm Memorial Farm owned jointly by the
deceased and his brother in law Mr. Taylor; two half sisters, Mrs. Jesse
Lumm,
Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Gene Clabes, Henderson, Ky., and a half
brother, Willis Wilson, Cap
Girardeau, Mo.  The accident fatality was
never married.  His father was Leonard Lumm,
Griffin, who died in
October 1955.

Insofar as state and county authorities have been able to ascertain,
there was no witness of the accident.  An unidentified driver of a
Ready Biscuit Bakery Co., truck,
St. Louis, traveling west on Road 66,
reported at
4 a.m. to Orlie Stone and Walter York, New Harmony
attendants at the
Wabash bridge toll house that a wrecked auto was
partially on the highway a quarter mile east of
New Harmony at the
Gresham creek bridge.

Bridge attendants notified State Police Trooper Forrest V. Cooper,
New
Harmony
, who with County Coroner Meinschein, Mt. Vernon made the
investigation.

Rain and snow were falling when authorities reached the scene of the
fatality and were falling at the time of the accident.  They could have
obstructed Lumm's vision as he traversed the familiar road or he could
have intended to turn north on the
Griffin road between Gresham creek
bridge and
New Harmony at the junction of the Griffin highway and the
state road at
Benton Building supply Co. plant.

State Trooper Cooper said that Lumm was dead when he arrived on the scene.

Since the accident fatality had been receiving medical treatment for
high blood pressure and there was no evident that the brakes of his auto
had been applied.  Corner Meinschein decided upon an autopsy which was
performed by Dr. J. E. Crist.
Mt. Vernon.  The autopsy revealed head and
chest injuries resulting from the driving being crushed against the
steering post as the cause of death and Coroner Meinschein's verdict was
accidental death.

The auto had hit the 10 to 12 inch wide, concrete abutment dead center
and the abutment left an impression on the front end of the auto.  The
force of the impact drove the motor back about 2 1/2 feet, but it did
not enter the driver's compartment.  The rim of the steering wheel had
been folded down and Lumm had been hurled into the steering post and
horn button.  The auto had halted with the left wheel 10 to 12 inches on
the pavement.

Following attendance of the basketball tournament the Posey clerk had
visited in the home of James H. Price, former
Griffin resident, at 1524
Sweetser,
Evansville.

The tragedy victim had been prominent in Posey county Democratic
politics since boyhood, achieving part recognition in the Posey county
Young Democrats Club which he served as president.  Although elected
twice to a two year term as county treasurer, he actually served five
years as treasurer due to the amendment to the
Indiana Constitution
extending the tenure of the county treasurer's office.

He had been a member of the Posey county Memorial Board of Trustees and
had been active in efforts to secure greater use of memorial coliseum in
Mt. Vernon as a recreation and community center.  One of his major
undertakings, although at present unrealized was the restoration of
Memorial coliseum swimming pool.  He was a leader in
Bethel township and
Posey county civic affairs and an ardent supporter of
Griffin High
school
's athletic teams.

Other affiliations were with the Toastmasters Club and Posey aerie, No.
1717, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
