Ray W. Mackey, 70, of Alamo, Ind., treasurer of Montgomery county of which Crawfordsville is the county
seat and a native of Mt. Vernon was fatally stricken with a heart
ailment as he drove from his home in Alamo to his office in Crawfordsville early yesterday.
Announcement of the death was received in Mt. Vernon by Mrs. Hugh W. Price, a relative.
The deceased was for many years a clerk in the Mt. Vernon post office. He was crippled many
years ago by an auto accident between Evansville and Mt. Vernon while he was a postal employee.
Mackey's body was found in his auto which had nosed into a fence
off State Road 32. He apparently had been dead an hour and a half when
found. The auto was undamaged and there was no evidence that Mackey had
been injured.
The deceased was serving his second term as treasurer of Montgomery county which
would not have expired until December31, 1956. He had been very
active in Montgomery county Republican politics. Prior to his elections
as treasurer he had successively been a traveling salesman, Montgomery county license branch manager and at the
time of his becoming a candidate for treasurer was an automobile salesman.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Proffitt
& Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Burial will be at Alamo. Rev. Donald Mc Mahon, pastor of
First Methodist Church of Crawfordsville, will conduct the services.
Surviving are
the wife, nee Jacqueline Jackson, who is ill; two sons, Howard, Crawfordsville,
and Ray, Jr., U. S. Army, who with his wife and four children reside in Japan,
and a brother Charles Pascal Mackey, Knox. Ind. The deceased was a son of Henry
Clay Mackey and Sarah Mackey, Mt. Vernon.
