MARY ALICE BAILEY SALTZMAN

April 21, 1954

Mrs. Mar Alice Bailey Saltzman, a member of one of Posey county's oldest families and whose remarkable life span of almost a century was spent in her native county, died at 7 a.m. today at the home of her son, Loren C. Saltzman, on State Highway 69 a mile north of Mt. Vernon.

She was the widow of George W. Saltzman, a successful farmer who died on Labor Day, 1943 and observed her 91st birthday last August 2.

She was born north of old Beech Primitive Baptist Church in East Lynn township, a daughter of James J. Bailey, an early Posey county commissioner, and Sarah Jane DeFur Bailey, both representatives of pioneer local families.

For the last 50 years she had resided in the Mt. Vernon vicinity.  Her strong physique and alert mind which she combined with industry and sound business judgment to acquire and operate with her husband, extensive agricultural interests continued into her advanced years.  Since the Christmas holidays, however, her health had failed but she continued to spend the days at her home a quarter mile north of Mt. Vernon on Road 69 and the nights with her son and daugher-in law.

The body is at the Short Niehaus Funeral Home and will remain there through funeral services on Friday.  Friends are invited to call at the Short-Niehaus chapel, beginning Thursday morning.  Elder Leo Dodd, Eldorado, Ill., of the Primitive Baptist Church, will conduct the funeral service in the Short-Niehaus chapel at 2 p.m. Friday.  Burial will follow in Old Beech cemetery alongside the grave of her deceased husband.

Surviving, in addition to the son, are two grandsons and four grandchildren, and three bothers, John A. Bailey, Mt. Vernon, Thomas Bailey, Riverside, Calif and Lawrence Bailey, who resides in the Masonic Home at Franklin, Ind.
