ELIZABETH LEUTHART SMITH

Mrs. Elizabeth Leuthart Smith, mother of Father Raymond B. Smith, pastor of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday (4 Jan 1956) in St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.  She would have been 80 years old on the coming Feb. 18.

 

She was the widow of Bernard Smith, who died in 1929.  For the last 11 years she had been the housekeeper for her son, Father, Smith, and had resided in Mt. Vernon during his St. Matthew's pastorate dating from September 1950.

 

A coronary condition was fatal, Mrs. Smith was hospitalized at St. Mary's from Oct 29 to Nov 12 and then returned to St. Matthew's Church rectory here.  Her condition worsened decidedly this week and she re-entered St. Mary's Hospital Tuesday.

 

Surviving in addition to the son in Mt. Vernon, are two other sons, Charles, Borden, In., and Elmer, Floyd Knobs, Ind; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Koopman, Floyd Knobs, Ind., and Mrs. Earl  Feagans, Montgomery, Ind., and two brothers, Joseph Leuthart, Floyd Knobs, and Vollie Leuthart, Sellersburg, Ind.

 

The body was moved from St. Mary's Hospital to Kraft Funeral Home in New Albany.

 

It will remain at the New Albany funeral home until it is taken to the deceased's home parish church St. Mary's at Navilton, Floyd Knobs, where Solemn Requiem High Mass will be conducted by the son, Father Smith, at 10 a.m. Monday.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
