JOHN W SMITH

Oct 30, 1953

Funeral service will be conducted Saturday afternoon for John W. Smith, patriarch of Lynn Township and life long resident of one Lynn township farm north of Smith school, who died at 11:30 A.M. Thursday (29 Oct 1953) in Boehne Hospital near Evansville.  He would have been 90 years old on the coming New Year's Day.

The body is at the Short - Niehaus Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon and will remain there through the funeral service to be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Short-Niehaus chapel.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a pioneer Posey county stock, the son of Elijah N. Smith and Marty Ann Patterson Smith, and he embodied in his sterling character the pioneer virtues of solid honesty and integrity which figured so prominently in the settling and development of this community.

His grandfather, Allen Smith, in 1850 donated the acres of ground on which Smith school is located and the early educational institution that has survived down through the years was named for the donor.

The late deceased was born on the farm on which he spent his entire life.  His birthplace was a short distance north of his late residence.

His health failed in recent years and had deteriorated appreciably since April.  He had been hospitalized for the last 10 weeks.

Surviving are a son, Raymond B. Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. Harry Mentzer, both of Lynn township nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Galladay, Reseda, Calif.  The deceased's wife who died in 1951 was before her marriage Emma Gregory.

Mr. Smith was a long-time member of Arctic lodge, F. & A. M. New Harmony, and of Olive Methodist Church.
