EMMA MILLER STINSON
The Mt. Vernon community today mourned the passing of one of its
most beloved women, Mrs. Emma Miller Stinson, widow of Robert V. Stinson,
Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois mercantile leader, and in her right a
person of deeply imbued Christian principles reflected in countless deeds of
aid to those in need.
Mrs. Stinson, who was 88 years old last June 26, died at 4 p.m.
Wednesday (19 Sep 1956) at her home
at 623 Mulberry street after failing health for several years and a series of
paralytic strokes dating from last May 3.
Mr. Stinson, the husband, died
The body of Mrs. Stinson is at Short-Niehaus
Funeral Home. Dr. Mearl P. Culver, Evansville,
supply minister of First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon, of which the
deceased was a most faithful member, will conduct the funeral service at 2:30
p.m. Friday in Short-Niehaus chapel. Burial
will be in the family plot in Bellefontaine cemetery.
In accordance with the often expressed wish of Mrs. Stinson the
family requests no floral offerings suggesting that in lieu of flowers friends
may give to the Crippled Children's Society, the Heart Fund or Presbyterian
Church Memorial.
Of the three children born to the union of Robert v. Stinson Sr.,
and Emma Miller in Enfield, Ill., in March, 1891, two are living, A son Dr.
William D. Stinson, prominent Memphis, Tenn., ear, nose and throat specialist,
died suddenly in the fall of 1953.
The surviving children are a son, Robert V. Stinson, Jr.,
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Robert L. Stinson, Mt.
Vernon shoe merchant, Mrs. H. A. Dettwiler,
Greenfield, In., David Stinson, Memphis, Tenn., Charles T. Alexander, Jr., a
copywriter of The Washington Star in Washington, D.C. and Peggy De Somme Foote,
Greenville, Miss; nine greatgrandchildren, and a
brother, Charles N. Miller, San Jose, Calif.
