LAWRENCE J. UTLEY

Lawrence J. Utley, 82, well known Posey county citizen and retired Mt. Vernon contractor, died at his home 515 Canal street at 2:45 o'clock this morning.

 

He had been in ill health for the past five years and his condition had been serious the past six months.  Complications were the cause of his death.

 

Mr. Utley, one of the best known men in the county, was born northeast of Mt. Vernon on the farm recently occupied by the late Fred Moore, the son of Carol and Sarah K. Trafford Utley, both natives of Indiana.

 

Mr. Utley served the youth of Southern Posey county for 19 years as a teacher in rural schools.

 

Later he became a road contractor and became widely known in Southern Indiana for his excellent work.   He followed this work for 18 years and some time ago retired from all activity.  He had spent the greater part of his life in Posey county.  

 

Mr. Utley was a member of Mt. Pleasant (Miller) General Baptist Church and Mt. Vernon lodge, I.O.O.F.

 

New survivors are a daughter, Miss Edna Utley, a teacher in Howard Roosa school in Evansville but who resides at home; a son, Laslie Utley, well known escalating contractor; one granddaughter; three great grandchildren, and two brother, Charles and Walter Lee Utley of R.R. 3, Mt. Vernon

 

The wife died in August 1956, and a grandson, Paul Utley son of Mr. and Mrs. Laslie Utley died five years ago..

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Weisinger Funeral Home chapel, with Rev. J. Kenneth Forbes, minister of First Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

 

Friends may call at the Weisinger Funeral Home after 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
