Mt. Vernon's Oldest Native Dies Early Today at Age
101
Mrs. Jennie L. Wade, who was Mt. Vernon's oldest native, died this morning at 6:30 at Bethel Sanitarium in Evansville where she had resided for the past five
years. She was 101 and a descendant of a pioneer family.
Her father was Milton Lechtenberger and
her mother was Victoria Thomas. The first Thomas family came to Posey County in 1813.
Following the death of her husband, Albert, in New Harmony, where the couple had lived for a number
of years, Mrs. Wade returned to Mt. Vernon and lived in the family home located at
209 East water St. After several years she sold the home and moved into an
apartment at 505 College Ave. She resided there until entering the
nursing home.
She was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church and in early
years had been choir director and organist.
Her nearest surviving relative is John W. Spencer, a
great-nephew. A number of second-cousins also survive.
Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Norvell Funeral Home
with the Rev. Paul Stone officiating. Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery and friends may call after 7 tonight.
