DANIEL WILLIS

Daniel Willis, 92, native of Posey county and a virtually lifelong resident of Posey county and Southern Illinois died at 9:20 p.m. Saturday (27 Feb 1954) at the Maxey Nursing Home in Evansville where he had been a patient with a broken hip for several months.

The body has been brought to the Weisinger Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.  The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Weisinger chapel.  Burial will be in Old Beech cemetery in East Lynn township.  Officiating clergymen will be Elder E. T. Fleener, Evansville, of the Primitive Baptist Church, and Rev. Arthur Blackburn, retired Posey county General Baptist minister.

Mr. Willis was the head of five generations at the time of his death.  He was born in Posey county June 1, 1861, the next to the youngest child of George Willis and Mary Ann Padgett Willis.

In September, 1884, he was married to Jane Causey and to this union five children were born Mrs. Ovella Willis Saltzman, formerly of Evansville and now ill at her daughter's home in Phoenix, Ariz; Mrs. Cora Willis Bennet, Wooster, Ohio; who is due to arrive in Mt. Vernon today, Mrs. Flossie Willis Barger, Armona, Calif; Lee Roy (Lollie) Willism Ullin, Ill., and David Earl Willis, Bakersfield, Calif, Mr. Willis also is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Vercie Ulen, Ullin, Ill., 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and six - great great grandchildren.

The deceased was a farmer during his entire active life, first in Posey county and when at Ullin, Ill, where he moved his family in February, 1904.  In 1920, the Willis family moved to Dexter, Mo., where Mr. Willis farmed for six years before returning to Ullin.  Mrs. Willis, the wife, died in Ullin in December, 1929 after which Mr. Willis returned to Indiana, making his home in Mt. Vernon and later in Evansville where he resided with his daughter, Mrs. Saltzman, for several years before she became ill.
