BOLING, Mary - 10 - loses leg

Source: Greencastle (Weekly) Banner-Times Friday 1 Nov 1895 p 5

Mary, the 10-year-old daughter of John Bolling, colored, whose illness has been noted in these columns before, had to undergo Sunday an operation by which one of her lower limbs was removed between the knee and hip.  Dr. Poole, assisted by Drs. Lammers and Evans performed the operation. The little girl was hurt about 3 weeks ago in climbing on a wagon, her foot catching in a wheel, breaking it and clogging a blood vessel. Blood poisoning and gangrene set in and nothing but amputation would save the child’s life.  The girl was doing as well as could be expected today.
