Civil War - plea for food

The families of our soldiers are suffering, many of them for the necessaries of life. In other towns, patriotic farmers are lending their assistance. Why should they not do so here?  By order of the Ladies Soldiers' Aid Society, an opportunity is given for all to show their willingness to aid in this noble cause.— God has blessed us with an abundance. Let us share it with those whose homes poverty has entered. Let the soldiers in the distant field know that while he is giving his life for his country, his family is cared for and supplied with all needful comfort. Will the farmers of Putnam County listen to this call for help, and bring to town, wood, flour, meal, beef, bacon, turkeys, chickens, butter, eggs, apples, dried fruits, or any thing else that will support life? The first Saturday of December is the day suggested for delivery of such goods.  They will be received at T. W. Williamson's Store.   Let us have a display of patriotism never before witnessed in our community.  Let no one excuse him or herself from helping this good work.
R. S. Dorsey, By Order of the Society, Greencastle, Ind., Nov. 13, 1863 – thanks to MLH
