Smallpox

Source: Greencastle Herald (Putnam County, Indiana) 20 June 1919 p 1

The fourth case of smallpox in Greencastle was reported today when the home of Vernon Shirley, south Jackson Street was quarantined by city health officers after Mr. Shirley was found to be suffering of the disease. Three victims of the disease are confined to an upstairs room of the Ben Turner boarding house on north Jackson street, suffering of the disease. Each of the victims is said to have the disease in a light form. One Greencastle physician today said he believed the disease was chicken pox and not smallpox,  anyway. Mr. Shirley is an attendant at a north Jackson street filling station.
