Alexander Cemetery

Alexander Cemetery

Started by Thornton Alexander, a black man, in the 1830's.
This is known as the cemetery for the blacks associated with the Union Literary School.
It is now in the middle of a farm east of State Road 227 and north of county road 600 South.
Northeast of Spartanburg.
This cemetery has been fenced by Mr. & Mrs. Comer, the owners of the farm.

Margaret Shaffer, "Aunt Peggy", died about July, 1856, 65 years.
Mary Davis, wife of Allen Davis; date of death not known, 56 years 6 months.

Mary Ann, wife of Collier Simpson, died December 9, 1865, 66 years.
Sarah A., wife of R. Holly, died December 24, 1866, 85 years.
Allen Davis, died about 1870, 80 years.
Abraham Cotman, died in 1876, 85 years.
Polly Burden, widow of Lewis Burden, died in 1876, supposed to be 100 years old, or even more than that.
Susan Robbins, wife of Richard Robbins, died January 7, 1877, 52 years.
Richard Robbins, died February 26, 1878, 78 years.
Silas Burden, died in 1879, 62 years.
Phillip Holland, died about 1872, 83 years.
Cesar Peale, very old, died in the winter of 1880.

Arba Cemetery

Arba Cemetery

Probably the first cemetery in Randolph county, this was started by Quakers.
Located in Arba, on county road 600 East just north of the Wayne County Line on road 1100 South.
This is also the site of the first church and school in Randolph County.

Mount Gilead Cemetery

Mount Gilead Cemetery

Located four miles East and one mile South of Lynn, on the Boundary Line Road and county road 900 South.
The earliest known burial here was in 1854.
This cemetery is in fairly good condition, except for the two back rows.
There are several stones broken or lying on the ground.

Lost Hopewell Cemetery

Old Lost Hopewell Today -William & Elizabeth Norton Tombstones

Known as the Old Lost Hopewell Cemetery since nothing remains of it.
The cemetery was located on the Wayne County line about 1/2 a mile west of County Road 350 East.
The church was relocated in Wayne County. Known burials are the Nortons.

Norwich Cemetery

Also called Crist or Wiggs, this was located near a church school.
It is in the middle of a field, just east of Spartanburg. West of county road 750 East, between 700 and 800 South.
In 1865 the farm was owned by John Randel, a black man, and at least eight members of his family are here, as well as many of the early pioneers.
It has been fenced by the Township Trustee.

Norwich (Old Quaker, near C. Crist's southeast of Spartansburg, section 15, Town 16, Range 1).
This cemetery was established in 1825, and is still in use for purposes of burial.
A large number have been interred here, but only a few old persons have tombstones, as follows:

Samuel Ruby, not old.
James Moore, October, 1875, 99 years.
Hannah, wife of James Moore, April 20, 1869, 85 years.
John Randle (colored), September 27, 1881, 85 years.

Sarah, wife of Windsor Wiggs, August 4, 1881, 84 years.
Like some other cemeteries in this region, it lies in the midst of a farm, nearly half a mile from any public highway, and with no avenue of entrance.



Spartanburg Cemetery
Spartanburg Cemetery

Located on the North edge of Spartanburg, on the West side of County Road 700 East.
This cemetery is very old. Many pioneers are buried here.
Revolutionary War Veteran, Christopher Borders is buried here.
A Memorial dedicated to all soldiers and sailors living and dead who served the United States in any of its Wars was erected in 1931.
