The  Farmland Enterprise
Apr. 4, 1890
----------
Obituary -- Edward Gray was born in Franklin county, Virginia, October 17th, 1816. He moved with his parents to Winchester, Ohio, in 1833, where he lived two years, and then he came with his parents to Randolph county and settled on a farm in what is now Green township. He continued to reside in this county until his death, which occurred at his residence in Farmland, on Tuesday night, March 25, 1890. He was married to Miss Nancy Godwin, of Fairview, this county, March 29, 1828. Six children -- four boys and two girls -- were born to them, three of whom, John T., Nathan E. and James L. P. Gray, are yet living. His wife died October 8th, 1888.
The deceased was a member of church for nearly fifty years and was recognized as a consistent, christian man by all who knew him. Just before his death his son Nathan received a letter from friends at his old home in Virginia inquiring regarding his health, and the latter informed him of the fact. His reply was, "Make a note of it and write to them after my funeral. Tell them to meet me on the other side of the river, and say that I died as steadfast in the faith as ever." A little later, he beckoned to his son and said to him, "Tell them to meet me on the sunny banks of deliverance. One and all there we will splice glad hands, and we will go in to go out no more. Good-by."
His funeral occurred at Hopewell church, on Thursday, 27th Inst., conducted by Rev. S. J. McElwee. A large number of relatives and friends were in attendance.
Uncle Ned, as he was familiarly called, was a man of steady and industrious habits. He gave most of his life to farming and did much to improve the country. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him.
