To Mother
----------
We are lonesome for you, mother. And we’re longing for the day
That we’ll wend our way to Heaven. O’er the paths you loved to stray.
Never will a better mother bless this mundane sphere of ours;
Never will so sweet an angel come to us in our sad hours.
Up in heaven do you worry lest our burden be too great? Do you ‘wait us at the gate?
From our birth we loved you, mother, when as children we would creep up into your lap and cuddle-
While you’d sing our fears to sleep
Through the years since then, dear mother, you’ve been patient with us all,
And it grieves us beyond measure, when in vain to you we call.
No more your foot-steps tread the rooms that you made sweet and dear;
Oh, mother! What is “Home Sweet Home” When you’re no longer near?
The voice we loved to hear is stilled- you’re out there ‘neath the sod,
Yet still your voice seems calling us- Calling us to God.
Signed husband and daughters.
