Mrs. Fannie Shank, 83,
Walks Into Path Of
Morning Westbound
----------
Mrs. Fannie Shank, 83, was killed at 7:15 o'clock this morning when she walked in front of a westbound New York Central freight at the Plum street crossing in Farmland. Mrs. Shank was walking toward town on the east side of the street when she stepped in front of the oncoming train.
Gilbert Mullen, only witness to the tragedy said that Mrs. Shank seemed to be looking west, apparently unaware of the approaching train. Mr Mullen was unloading a car of coal in front of the depot about a block and a half west of the crossing. Dr. Lowell W. Painter, county coroner investigating, said that the body was thrown about twenty feet and then rolled along the rails, being found about one half block west of the crossing between the rails under the train. The engine of the freight was about one-quarter mile up the tracks when the train stopped. The body was badly mangled, Dr. Painter said. He also said Mrs. Shank was hard of hearing and had poor eyesight.
Surviving are the husband, Levi; two sons, Roy and Wallace, both of Farmland; and a daughter, Naomi, of Muncie.
The body was removed to the Thornburg funeral home in Farmland, where services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. N.H. Thornburg in charge. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery. The casket will not be opened.
